lamps in the middle of the room, how to light and avoid trailing cable

We have a reasonable sized living room and our sofas are currently situated in the middle of the room rather than pushed out against a wall. I've seen lots of photos with furniture in this configuration, yet somehow they also manage to have either floor or table lamps situated directly behind or next to the sofas, away from the walls. They don't seem to have cables trailing to the nearest walls across the floor, so how do they do it? Is this just an American thing as most of the pictures I've seen seem to be from US homes. How has anyone in the UK resolved this issue?
