Should we leave a small gap between a laminate worktop and cooker?

We have a much-loved vintage gas New World Rangette, and are fitting a laminate worktop on either side. Should we leave a small gap between cooker and worktop? The last worktop – which lasted around 20 years – had no gap, but it was difficult to clean up liquid spills down the side of the cooker. My husband likes a 'built-in' look, but I'd prefer to be able to clean up easily! The silicone 'extenders' to cover gaps seems to come in only white, black and silver, and our cooker is cream. Any suggestions would be welcome!
