Retaining wall versus a deck
Comments (2)On the up side, it does look like a beautiful house, lucky you. I feel for you with the builder, as we say over here, 'what a berk!'. I'd go for a cedar or composite deck in an aged cedar colouring to blend with the house. I don't know where abouts in the U.S you are, but you need to consider the longevity of real wood versus composite. The composite decks available to you are far greater than they are over here thankfully. Something like the first pic would be a great shape, but silvery grey:- The other pics are more for colour choice....See MoreSloping garden with crumbling retaining wall. Help and advice needed.
Comments (23)Have you thought of gabions, provided you put the facing layer of something attractive that you like you can fill the back with all the old bricks and rubble (no soil) that would save on the amount of money you would have to spend on the facing and journeys to the tip to get rid of rubbish. If you wanted you could add a decking board, or anything you fancied on the top to use as seating this doesn't need to be the full width of the garden and is quite cheap to buy but do treat with preservative to give a long life, I definitely would put plants behind to stop people tripping over and falling on to the patio. Hope this will helps you....See Moreplants behind retaining wall
Comments (10)There are several Evergreen shrubs which would do the job. Things like Hebes, Box, Cistus, Lavendar and Euonymus fortunei. To stop it looking a bit samey and flat, you could add something taller by the steps and the far end. Something like Japanese Maples (need mostly shade), Hydrangeas or a dwarf fruit tree or two (usually grow to about 6-8 ft) - none are evergreen but they do add change and interest as they flower and children love picking fruit! Comments (10)I levelled my garden, a paved area of roughly 6m x 6m that sloped upwards 2 1/2 feet. We also got crazy quotes for digging it out, which thanks to the joys of a London terrace had to be done completely by hand with bags of dirt carried through my kitchen. We ended up managing that part ourselves with help from casual, non-builder labour. (Turns out the guys at the local gym don’t earn much, have some spare hours, and have lots of friends in the same boat.). I studied up on retaining walls and became convinced that a timber retaining wall would work. We bought treated timber through Jackson’s Fencing using their slotted fence posts for support. The retaining wall/ new fence was professionally installed, but they had very little digging to do to tidy up the removed area. Six years later it’s still going strong and I fully expect it to last....See MoreS
