Colour for banisters - F&B
Comments (13)I would say you have 2 options: 1) paint as Pat says, but choose a nice dark matt colour, ( or I suppose White if that is you want, its a matter of personal preference), and handrail dyed and varnished MATT, or, stain / matt varnish the whole lot. Here, with discussion with client, and led by the client who wanted a low maintenance finish, the 300 yr old beams had been treated and left as natural, unfinished, and the new soft wood ( budget did not allow for oak or hardwood) was finished in stain and matt varnish - I thought it might not work, but the end result was pleasing to all and very very happy client. This expressed the new joiner from the older structural timber frame. What do you think?...See MoreHall, stairs, landing wall treatment
Comments (2)Hello Stuart_Smith4711, Just reading your dilemma, it seems you have great options here, but naturally it comes down to a budget at the end of all ideas! These are some of my thoughts and options: Option 1: You could keep the contrasting spectrum of light and dark, which adds appeal but maybe change the colours altogether just to mix it up a bit. Option 2: It seems from your photos that you don't have much light around the stairways. You could change the darker spectrum to a lighter spectrum as well. This will bounce more light around those shady areas of the stairways. Option 3: Get a wallpaper mural, whether for just for the lighter spectrum or both. This will create "another world" between the floors of your house, which will be interesting as you pass through. Option 4: Hang your eclectic art pieces as you wish along the stairways walls. Perhaps theming them up or down the stairs by size, soft colours to bright colours, etc. Option 5: Buy some new artwork for a change of scenery. Option 6: Have some bespoke artwork specifically created for complimentary or contrasting effect to your final decision of decor. As I am a bespoke artwork artist, I would like to offer my services to you if option 6 takes your interest. I also have many eclectic pieces I have created already that are available to view and to buy if I can encourage you to have a look at at your leisure: Bespoke Designs: http://www.houzz.co.uk/projects/1720017//bespoke-designs The Jones Collection Gallery: http://thejonescollection.gallery If there is anything I can help you with, feel free to contact me through my houzz profile or my website. Comments (16)Personally, i think it depends on what you are planning to do to the rest of the house. If the rest of the house is staying in a traditional style (like that is currently in your hall), i would keep it as it is lovely and would be in keeping. To do such a massive contrast may look a little odd. If, however, the rest of your house is (or you are planning it to be) modern, I would change it as it would be in keeping with the new style. Essentially i think it's a nice staircase but completely dependent upon what style the rest of the house either is or will be :)...See MoreUpdate this stair banister?
Comments (7)Oh that’s tricky. It’s not a current style but it’s lovely wood and very nicely made. I think I’d be inclined to keep it as is, unless you really dislike it. Will the stripes be changing...? I think it may look a lot more current with more modern decor. I would probably paint the stringer (I think that’s what the big flat bit at the side is called) to match your built in storage, but leave the handrail and end post unpainted....See MoreDaisy England
