Storage ideas for small loft bedroom

We live in a dormer bungalow, which we have been renovating over the past few years. Upstairs there is the main bedroom and small 3rd bedroom. I'm now 6months pregnant (1st baby) so we are turning our attention to storage in the small bedroom, which will become the nursery. Gym equipment you see in the photos will obviously be moved. Baby won't be using this room herself for a while but we are hoping to plan ahead a bit with fitted storage. The big chest of drawers that is there at the moment will do initially but won't be safe when she becomes mobile, as we can't secure it to the wall.

So I'm looking for ideas for fitted storage, such as how it could be laid out for best functionality. I appreciate it's tricky without the room being furnished and this will change anyway as baby grows up. We have no plans to move anytime soon.

I thought the alcove area may make the best wardrobe then fit some combination of cupboards/ drawers etc along the red wall in the drawing but am really not sure what would work best!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I live in a house like this and have two boys. I have built shelves into the eaves as we have enough lego to open a shop (seriously you would not believe). Older one now 14 and displays models, books etc. Clothes storage probably needs to be fairly minimal when young. I can attach a photo tomorrow.

I agree the alcove would make a great fitted wardrobe. If you like the chest of drawers then keep it (it's actually really easy to attach furniture to the walls- I have a climber ATM so everything is now attached!). Or if you want to start again there are some lovely multifunction nursery sets you can buy. Congrats and enjoy!

You have big windows so I understand the instinct that dark colours will look good- However I think that in a space with lower ceilings you have to keep it light and paint the walls and ceiling the same colour so that the height of the ceiling is less noticeable. I also would be trying to find a lower bed than the previous owners. I suspect that part of the desire to have a deep colour is to warm up a space that currently feels like it has hard lines and with nothing in the room it probably feels a little clinical. You can however make a room feel softer and more cozy with pale colours by layering natural materials. So you could get blinds, natural wall coverings, a sumptuous rug, and linen soft furnishings for headboard and bedding.

Maybe hang a shelf way up over the bed, so you can store clothes in nice baskets? And I'd recommend a closet. Fold as much clothes as you can. My son has the shallow Ikea Pax with hangers, drawers and shelves. Might work for you too. And when I grew up, my parents' room was even smaller then yours, their closet was on the upstairs landing. My dad made a chest that fitted right next along the bed. They kept bedsheets and towels in there. What are the exact measurements of your bedroom?

The first option seems to work better when you add furniture in? Given they'll be starting secondary school soon'ish I don't know whether a wardrobe and chest of drawers is a better option for their uniform? You can also use the bottom of the wardrobe for shoes, sports equipment etc and I'd pick a colour that blends into the wall. I personally wouldn't do 2 feature walls however use colour blocking to zone each of their spaces. Try and find a blue and yellow that work together and add a couple more complementary shades. I've added a couple of pics but there are loads online. You could do a geometric shape or border etc. Having their duvet in their colours may be an idea too. I would probably go for beanbags for seating which can go at the side of the bed when not in use. Is their room under the bed for baskets for toys? Maybe also shelves over the bedside table?

A photo would be great, thanks. My imagination is failing me! The chest of drawers is fine but I really just put it there instead of getting rid of it when we changed our main bedroom furniture. Was surprised to find it fitted perfectly! I don't think we could attach it to the wall where it is because it's just a paper thin partition to a wardrobe in the other room. It's pretty big for the room if we move it out the alcove.

Hi there. This is how I used the eaves space in my son's room. We do have clothes storage too but I found this space was good for storing shallow things.....
