Could you say what you have made the screen from? I'm wanting to create a similar look but do not have funds for blockwork or corten steel. Thanks.

It's made using 10mm thick aluminium sheet fixed to 3 x posts at the back. Painted with exterior eggshell paint. Wouldn't be much cheaper than building a concrete block wall and rendering it....

Hi lesleyschillinger, what do you mean about more artistic? A drawing, shape or material? Frosted glass is a nice option. Maybe you can add a digital print illustration (any style) to the frosted glass. Same colour as the glass will create a really nice effect and won't be too heavy visually. Tips for a stress free school year and the benefits of interior plantation shutters As a mother of four (now grown-up) children, I know the feeling only too well; the end of a long summer, filled with friends, excitement and holidays - energy levels begin to drop! I remember needing to delve deep into the energy reserves just to get them ready for the new term, new shoes, clothes, pens and pencils the list is endless. Finally the day arrives, the children go back and a mix of emotions well up - relief and the empty missing feeling, I was lucky in that I always had my fifth child; The Shutter Shop, to keep me going! As owner of The Shutter Shop, an interior shutter company which I set up when my eldest was only five, almost thirty years ago, I knew that the juggling of work and holidays puts even the most energetic and organised of mothers to the test! Going back to work to focus on selling interior shutters and wooden venetian blinds into the London shutter market, gave me a different set of questions to think about but this time from interior designers and retail customers. I was replacing times tables with CAD drawings, spelling and grammar with panel configurations and geography questions with colour charts. Even though the kids may have gone back to school they are still at the forefront of every parent’s mind so I thought I would share my experience of some of the most common questions I get when discussing shutters, blinds and children. SHUTTERS, A DARKER ROOM AND A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP If your children are anything like mine, the moment the sun is up, they are up! While there were cost benefits over other window solutions, all my children had shutters in their rooms growing up. Shutters block out about 97% of the light coming through the window on their own, but what I wouldn’t have given for our integrated blackout blinds to have been invented twenty something years ago! GAME PROOF SHUTTERS I have been extremely fortunate that my son Ben (now 30) joined The Shutter Shop 18 months ago. He is now fully in control and running and growing our business with energy, but as the keen sportsman in his youth, he really put the robustness of our product to the test. Over the years any ball you can name has hit our shutters at some point during their life span. While I would love to say that our louvres can stand up to a rugby ball being hurtled at them, alas that is not the case and we have had to replace louvres in our shutters as we have for many customers. Fear not though it is possible and is much easier than you might think! However, they do take a fair bit of rough and rumble and I often have customers coming into replace shutters after fifteen years of use and while the guarantee is three years, the quality of the product means they will last! CHILD SAFETY FIRST The safety of children is of paramount importance to us and great care is taken to ensure that no toxic materials are used in the production of our shutters and that all our products adhere to strict government guidelines but we now have the ability to add key locks to shutters to give added security and as all our blinds come with child safety mechanisms they should give some peace of mind! CONTROLLING THE LIGHT FOR STUDY Today, children of all ages use computers on a daily basis from playing games to home work and revising for exams. Extensive viewing of the computer screen can lead to eye discomfort, fatigue, blurred vision and other symptoms of eyestrain. These symptoms may be caused by poor lighting, glare, an improper work station set-up. Ideally, the computer screen should be positioned in a way so that windows are not in front or behind it, but on its side. Also the adjustment of the interior light can make a big difference. Interior window shutters are our best allies, because they control the natural light in the room easing the strain on the eyes with just a small amount of effort like adjusting the louvres. Just a simple precaution can help to reinforce the appropriate viewing habits and assure that there is less strain on the eyes. I hope these little pointers helps those who, like me, are constantly thinking about their children, but don’t worry unduly and when the children go back to school make sure you enjoy the space and do something that YOU want to do! Your energy levels will need topping up before you know it they will be back again! Working and having children can be very tough, especially during the long holidays, but the rewards and confidence that it gives any person as an individual is enormous. I would like to think that I have always had a great relationship with all my children and they are now all my best friends and we have fun together.

This style need not be confined to older period houses – it can work equally well in a newly built home. The trend for traditional styles has also been reflected in the fashion for traditional paint colours and Edwardian / Victorian tile styles. Muted greys, greens and soft blues are highly popular right now and can complement the bathroom furniture beautifully. Lighting is really important to get right. With the right lighting they can really give your bathroom a spacious, bright feel. Mirrored and coloured glass, reflective wall panels and tiles, and high-gloss furniture and bath panels are popular light-enhancing materials used in bathrooms. Tiles are a natural and traditional choice for bathroom walls and floors and they are available in a bewildering choice of sparkling, glossy finishes. For an ultra-modern style you should look at smooth, handle-free high-gloss fitted bathroom furniture . Keeping furniture off the floor and using wall-mounted cabinets makes the look even more contemporary. Large mirrors and chandelier style lighting can add drama and a touch of luxury to your bathroom creating a real “wow” factor. Feature a Feature Wall Feature walls have become ‘a thing’ in 2016 and they can be applied to the bathroom just as much as to a lounge or bedroom. Use a “statement piece” of furniture, or dramatic tiling or a large ornate mirror or some other piece of wall art to bring attention and interest to an otherwise bland wall space. Let there be Light – as long as it’s the right light. The right lighting scheme will maximise the impact of glossy reflective surfaces. Thoughtful use of downlighters can cast elegant pools of light over selected surfaces and recessed LEDs placed behind glass will deliver a diffused, gentle light just ideal for this long unwinding soaks in the bath. 3.Back To Nature There is a real interest in more natural materials such as wood and stone. There is a real trend for “bringing the outside inside”. Wood and stone can add real character to your bathroom. They can also complement the sleek lines of modern bathroom. Stone tiles are a natural choice and can be used on walls and floors. Basins and baths carved from stone can add to the natural theme. You can add natural characteristics to your bathroom with wood panelling and as a bonus it will help to retain heat in the bathroom as wood is an excellent insulator. Tongue and groove is ideal for enhancing the heritage theme. For modern themes consider large panels of wood-effect composite. If real wood and stone are pushing the budget too far there are excellent choices available in stone or wood effect materials and it’s becoming increasingly hard to distinguish the natural from the manufactured. Metals are also becoming trendy again with brass, copper and rose gold making being favourites for fittings and trims. 4.For Dramatic Effect Convention – what convention? Increasingly we are seeing free thinking in the bathroom space with the use of solid, intense colours and bold, uber-trendy patterns. Glitzing up plain white ceramics is becoming a popular thing. This year’s colours are elegant and rich – think rich aubergines, deep blues and powerful, impact greys. You need to be careful though – especially in a smaller bathroom as the colours can overwhelm the space so if you are going to incorporate a bold colour or two consider using them in single blocks. You can also introduce vibrant colour via high-gloss lacquered storage cabinets and coloured-glass or by selecting strikingly coloured wall tiles, you won’t be short of choices here. 5.Simply Showers Recreating the Spa- like theme has seen a rise in bathrooms without baths – just showers. This often frees up space in the bathroom for additional furniture and storage options – or it can be left simply as free space for an expansive open look. We are also seeing “invisible edged” shower screens growing in popularity. Unlike metal-edged alternatives “invisible edge” shower screens add an ultra-modern touch. What materials can be used for creating futuristic textures on walls?

Interesting question. I think it depends on the budget of the film or tv production and it’s the job of the set decorator to be able to source materials and and be artistically creative within that budget. Might be that parts of some sets were made from cardboard, polystyrene, foam or other cheap material and then spray painted to look the part. Also a lot of sets, especially these days, are computer generated and the actors and a few props are green screened onto the CGI image. Your cafe sounds like a great project. For futuristic panels I would suggest a stronger material such as plywood or MDF and have someone who is handy with a jigsaw to cut them in the required shapes, stick to the wall with strong adhesive and then paint. Would love to see a before and after of your cafe:)
