Dear Sally, I personally thing that keeping the doors+frame and skirting white is better then all the same colour; it will keep the look fresh and if you get tired of the colours it's easier to re-paint just the walls. The ceiling definitely white or a much lighter shade of the wall colour. For the colour choice have a look at this link for inspiration: https://www.dulux.co.uk/en/colour-inspiration#topic=Hallway When looking at images make sure you notice the furniture style, shape and colours: are they dark? High contrast with the walls? There is a rug? what are the colours of the accessories? I would definitely add a focal point on the wall opposite the front door: a sideboard with a central piece (large vase with flowers?) and then a shimmery wall paper behind it perhaps or an artwork and a ceiling spot light pointed at it (alternatively a picture light just above it). By making that wall a feature you will bring the entrance hall more in proportion. Think also practical, do you have a place for shoes and coats? If you have enough depth at the end of the hallway, you could create a built-in wardrobe and cover its doors with wallpaper. Then picking a light colour in the wall paper design and use it for the walls. Also considering replacing the front door with one with glass inserts will give you extra light. Hello John, I do like a black door or a dark charcoal but it does really entirely depend on the scheme and where the doors are... If you have a set of wooden french doors that open onto a large sized room then they could be fantastic black or a charcoal.. If not it might be better to compliment these with the overall colour scheme which really should include all woodwork.. Skirting, dado, architrave and picture rail.. The other thing is the period and style of the architecture.. I personally have done both accentuated wood work and blended... It really is a matter of looking at the space as a whole... Smaller budgets are absolutely no problem at all if you know how to deal with the space as a whole... The other thing to consider in this scenario are the windows and the flooring as these too are vital. Here you can see the window frames are a mix of black and a mauve - I make my own paint as I chose a matt finish for the windows. (curtains and blinds to be added soon)... You can then see the walls are a complimentary colour as is the flooring.. Black can be fantastic and black doors are spectacular but do think of them as part of a scheme and not just as an accent... Same goes for white doors on black or darker architrave and wood work...... It all can work it's just knowing what would suit best... One other thing... Take into account the furniture and flow of the space... You want a coherent scheme throughout... For black doors think glass and brass hardware.... Oh and another one more thing... Will the doors be painted both sides or only one side and the other another colour... Are they going to be open and if so will this be worse if one colour or the other... Have a think before you start about these things... as you don't want to have to re-do : )) For very plain without any woodwork.. For a two tone look.... One of my favourites! Monochrome.. Symmetry Black on black... If you want to inject warmth and something altogether more spectacular... consider textures and natural materials... Woods, concrete, warm leathers and other interesting uses of black in spatial design..... I think fantastic!!!

Wow, thanks so much for all of the amazing tips. They have really helped us out with what might work best in the house. @ Isidora Markovic We are going to treat the wooden floors and keep them dark in Colour. I thought in the kitchen, we might add some spotlights on the ceiling to brighten up the area as a short term solution. @minnie101 Thanks so much, I agree to paint the beam white to blend it into the ceiling. The grasscloth paper will definitely be going. I like the brick as a feature wall and feel the grass cloth is a bit cheap looking. I like the idea of a warm neutral colour. The previous owners shared a picture with white walls and the whole room looked rather cold. As above, I agree that spotlights and lamps will warm the room up a lot. We are based in South Africa, so have many nice paints to choose from. Delux seems to be big here. @Lyn Hickson Thanks so much, Lyn. The precious owner actually owns all of the furniture and the art work. We have travelled quite a bit and thought it might be nice to print some of our images on canvas and hag them instead of art work, so hopefully it will work well in the room. Thanks @ Man About The House - The DIY & Odd Job Handyman - The wooden panel above the arch is actually a bamboo wallpaper which we will be removing - I agree to paint it a neutral/light colour. I'm also quite drawn to a grey colour palette perhaps with some navy/neutral furniture and accessorise with yellow and wood. (not sure if this will work but just a thought). Really appreciate the feedback so far. As much as I would love to live in it first, Im too much of a keen bean and definitely want to give it a lick of paint and get the dirty work done while we have time and before the furniture gets in. Thanks for all the advice - will post some after pictures one it comes together. :)

Hi, No, you don't have to paint all the woodwork in the same colour. You could do, but it's definitely not necessary.
