Help with the finishing touches to my hall / stairs
Comments (14)I agree with the radiator cover idea and I would put a large, very wide, rectangular mirror above it instead of the photographs. I think this would do a much better job of expanding space and creating light than the mirror at the end of the hall (although there's no reason you can't have both). Depending on how it looks with the large mirror I might also remove the thing hanging to the left of the door. In the space in the second photograph I would either remove that photograph in between the door and cabinet on the left or I'd have it in a white frame if you'd really like something there. In the third photograph I like the idea of a collage of frames leading up the stairs, but I find these frames a bit too chunky and rustic looking in that space. I think some white-framed or black-framed photographs would look better like in the above post. There the frames are simple but the photographs themselves inject colour which is carefully chosen and the end result is crisp and fresh and looks fabulous. At the top of the stairs I think one large rectangular print would look better than the two smaller ones....See MoreNeed help on how to revamp the staircase - How would you do it?
Comments (11)Ettel you wouldn't have to change the off white walls if you went for whitewashed/limed pale wood or used a white oil or wax on it Scandi style. I haven't seen it done but I was thinking of kitchens and floors in this kind of wood that I have noticed on Houzz. I also thought of the slightly rougher wood cladding used externally on buildings that you may be able to get from a wholesaler in a smaller quantity. This could give you a nice kind of rustic effect but then it would be up to you if you wanted to follow that into full country style or go with a more modern rustic aesthetic. I have seen nice things from habitat that would work with that. Just a more minimal look than country. Sorry, I've never attached a photo on houzz....See MoreRemove Skirting around Stairs?
Comments (18)We also had narrow and shallow stepped stairs in our previous home (a Victorian semi) and like you removed the carpet, painted and introduced a runner - which looked fab. The one thing I would add to what has already been said is to remember the context of the space; 1) the stairs will get a lot of use and foot pounding and a pale runner will quickly show this...it isnt dirt from shoes that would show, but bobbles from dark socks will quickly get trampled in and making keeping your stairs looking beautiful a lot harder than it should be. 2) don't be afraid of adding a stripe runner which will draw the eye to the top of the stair and create the illusion they are a good deal grander than they actually are. I would recommend something like grey stripes which will keep the calming special effect, plus create height and stop the stairs feeling intimidating. If you do add bars remember that this can eat into the foot space of each step. We went with Art Deco clips which looked amazing but didn't make our shallow steps any more hazardous than they already were. Whatever you chose I'm sure they will look great!...See MoreWood floor gap at skirting HELP!
Comments (19)Re infills - I meant if they remove the skirting and you had some spare flooring, you can put small pieces in to cover the larger gaps. However they would have to be glued in place as they might not stay put being so thin. Also need to leave the expansion gap still so it might not be worth it. I think get some ideas on weighing up the cost of buying thin profile beading to match the floor to put around all the skirt or, look to replace the skirting with a thicker one. Beading looks fine and no one will know that you didn't just put the floor down after the skirting was already there. At least it will be uniform. Beading isn't cheap though so get a price for both...See MoreAlexi
