Garden room landscaping advice needed!

Hello, looking for inspiration in terms of how we can landscape around a new garden room we are about to build at the back of our garden (full width). Our garden is at a lower down level to the house with 4 steep steps to the garden. We have 2 small children so looking for low maintenance but fun and child friendly. This is a sketch of the room we are building. I would like to put a path down to the shed but not sure how to corporate it without ruining the garden! Any ideas?

Here are more pictures of the garden. Some of the beds are a bit tired, is like to add more grasses etc. Also I've included a picture of the steps down to the lawn, I'd like to change these when we put a path in running down to the garden room.

Comments (6)Hi Martin, It depends on the soil type what variety of trees are best to plant. Was it a field before the house was been built? If it was its bound to be full of couch which takes time to get rid off. You might have to put up with a brown landscape until the summer as you will need to kept it sprayed the grass and weeds regrowth. Don't get into a hurry because you are moving in. Its best to do things slowly and with thought to what you want for a garden. Because it looks a large site according to the sketched plan you gave with the photos you need to divide the garden into separate areas to make it interesting and also with hedges or trees give privacy to your property. Last landscaping large gardens isn't cheap and sometimes the money isn't spent on the garden but in the house resulting a garden without much in it except lawn and no design. Comments (12)Hi I would look to raise the lawn up level with the path to the front door by building a smart brick retaining wall. You could then plant a low ish hedge along the top to provide further privacy but keep it to no more than 4/5 ft to prevent it overpowering the space and blocking light. For that reason I'd avoid conifers of any sort as they are thugs and take a lot of managing. By raising the lawn from pavement level it will give you some privacy anyway. It'd be nice to loose the concrete kerb along the side of the drive too so it doesn't feel and look like the road! Perhaps continue the brick round till it feathers out to meet the path to the door? A feature tree of small to medium size would also be a nice addition to the lawn. Look for one with dual seasonal interest ie. If it were mine it would be turned into a studio or office but could also be a gym/table tennis/games room/cinema/sauna and hot tub place to relax/play room for small children/snug for teenagers to hang out/workshop etc etc. Enlarge and double glaze the windows, insulate it, install a sedum lawn on the roof, improve the door or replace it with an opaque double glazed door shaped light source - the world is your oyster. Comments (3)We’ve had a large summerhouse built and have been using it since Dec. It has a toilet and shower and sink for doing a little washing up. It’s being used as an office as well as a man games room. It’s about 70m from our house and the water supply and drainage was a must to gain maximum usage and also stop dirty children running through the house in the summer. We did have a water supply half way up from a previous installation. The drainage added cost, but the company we went with used a pumped system which needed much less digging and can be hidden in bushes. We have 2 wall heaters for heat, as we decided to save on the cost of under floor heating. The floor is very cold, slippers are a must - I’m not sure that underfloor would have been enough though. 6 years agoHere we are, it's not scale and my symmetry isn't great either but just to give you a general idea. I've indented the line of the path on both sides to make room for the play equipment and on the other side you'd have more room to plant more things. But if you feel you need more grass area then I would have the path square/ rectangular. Either way I think having the symmetry on both sides would look good as the steps leading to it are in the middle. Anyway, hope this helps.

6 years agoDon't be afraid of straight lines and symmetry. You have some fabulous plants which will help to soften the edges. My small garden is basically a paved rectangle, but the plants help to add interest and it no longer looks rectangular. Your garden is lovely and the idea of the double path looks really good. 6 years agoGot carried away and did a few more sketches:) this one shows a curved instead of straight path. Added a little off shoot path as I noticed the door to summerhouse on the right.

6 years agoThis one basically breaks the lawn in half, which I'm not sure if you'd like. I've put in a low raised planter in the middle to give a little interest and the path going round it. I'd keep planting fairly low in this so you still get the view to the summerhouse.

6 years agoOk, this ones a bit more wacky. Using the same idea as the last one which breaks the lawn in half but in the middle I've put a boat! Was thinking of play equipment and a boat shape can be so versatile. When the kids are young it could be filled with sand for sand pit, or used as climbing frame etc. Then as the kids get older it could be used as a planter or seating area. Anyway here's some pics.

5 years agoFollowing on from my post some time ago we have started the hard landscaping part. We have decided to extend the patio at both sides. We have the maple tree one side so there isn’t much we can so that side but I am hoping to have my outdoor table on the other side. My dilemma is the platform/patio is about 4ft above the lawn area. With a toddler I’m trying to make it more child friendly. I’m wondering if there will be too much of a drop off the patio onto the steps? I’m planning on having a lower level planter below the patio. Hoping that will soften the fall if someone did rum off the top of the patio! Or do I build a narrowish planter to run along the edge to stop kids going off the edge!! Looking for inspiration!!

5 years agoSlide and climbing wall sounds like so much fun. Even I would enjoy it never mind the kids:) I think for the patio edge all you would need is a slight lip to act as a visual barrier, maybe 1-2bricks worth in height. If possible put in a raised planting bed level with the patio so it looks even more like a visual barrier. Some ideas:

5 years agoI’d like some advice on our maple tree, as you can see it’s very mature and gorgeous for shade in summer and fabulous in autumn, my qt is it feels very full and should we thin it out on top? I heard you should do this in autumn only due to the sap? I’d love some guidance?
