Really depends on how long you are planning to live with this kitchen for as to how much effort you put in. How good are the cabinet, could you replace the doors within your budget rather than paint them? If you do paint them Elephant Breath F&B paint or Dulux Egyptian Cotton or Fired Earth Oak Apple type colour for the cupboards so the copper tones in the flooring are not fighting with the wood tones? Not sure its possible but see if you can find a tiler to cut out the twee tiles and replace with someone else less twee that fits. I'd def replace the worktops with something more neutral. You've got a lot going on in the colour/texture of the floor and the design of the cabinets so I think you need to calm it down a bit.

Hi Michelle, I'd go for the lamp option as even with your white walls its quite dark. We have a few options for you to look at here if that helps: http://www.thebulbco.com/led-interior-lighting/table-lamps Or just a thought (sorry if you don't like the idea as know its not what you have asked!) but how about moving the display shelf to another area in your house and having this as a reading area, you could put some lights on the wall and put a nice chair under the stairs as can see from the books on your display shelf that you like reading?

Top Recesses: I think books would look lovely on the top recess (right) - Maybe a nice Photoframe on the right top. If too deep perhaps you could store double line of books,to the back of both. Regarding bottom recess, timber will look lovely. Middle Left, perhaps large ceramic art piece? Middle Right - Depends on final size of TV and equpment but could both (TV, DVD) be stored here?

The only way you will know costs is to have a few quotes from painters. My friend had her kitchen cupboards repainted from a golden wood to palest cream and it looks fantastic. This was several years ago. Such a professional job and worthwhile.
