Love this breakfast bar - how could I make/get one?

We are putting in a Magnet kitchen island with a composite stone top.

What do you think I need to do to incorporate a breakfast bar like this? (This one is a Houzz photo I saw)

I think my builder has good contacts for lovely pieces of wood, perhaps even with a 'live' edge. But the idea of finding just the right colour oil/stain to get it just the right colour is worrying.

Is there a simple solution?

My wife used to restore furniture. She reliably informs me, that the wood is Oak. If she were finishing that to order, to look the same, she would use antique pine Bri-wax for that finish and colour. If you want it washable / wipeable for a kitchen a similar effect could be achieved with a medium oak SATIN varnish. Try one coat to see if the colour is rich enough, if it is, put a clear coat on top. If not, put another coat of medium oak on. Two coats should suffice. Ronseal Satin Medium Oak Varnish.

You are going to be better off with a wide plank reclaimed timber than a new bit. However, it is possible to make it look old. The 'Live edge' as you call it isn't actually bark it's just rough cut and then been given a 'chopped' look. Also, not that difficult with a couple of good sanders and an axe.

However, She ' the wife', was ( is ) particularly talented in that direction. She assures me, that it's easy !!

Apparently the hard part is sourcing the right timber. It needs to be reclaimed for maximum effect, it also needs to be 'Wide plank' as two timbers joined together down the middle won't look right.

We've made tables to order with tops similar.

We are doing similar with a corner piece of wood for a breakfast bar. Haven't looked into it yet though as want to choose the flooring first (will also be wood style Karndean/Amrico). The worktop fitters drilled holes into the Quartz so that the wood can be glued & screwed. Good luck!

I was told to drill large bolts from underneath and also bond it with glue. I decided that people would probably lean on it and it might not last and end up looking awful. Also if I ever removed it I would be left with holes in the worktop so opted for the granite to extended over the end to make a breakfast bar instead. It works better because I get a larger island top to work on.

Thank you so much for your comments - I did try to attach a photo and twice it showed as attached but fails to have loaded. Anyway I agree - I love 3 more than 2 - it feels the right number to me. Whilst 2 decent sized ones would be fine too, I think the breakfast bar might look bigger with 3, plus we are having 3 seats under so I think 3 is what I'll go with. I hadn't thought about the size of the shades, so thank you for the advice of sticking to 25cm or less.

I don’t think the hatch adds anything to the rooms so I would remove the wall but not in its entirety. It’s a narrow kitchen but I wonder if a U shaped kitchen might work. This would necessitate blocking the kitchen door that leads into the hall. Access to the kitchen would then only be from the lounge roughly located where the hatch is now. Leave the base units that house the sink and hob where they are and run slimline base units along the kitchen/hall wall. I have heard of people using wall cupboards for this purpose. You could perhaps have open shelves above. Going back to the wall with the hatch. Take it down to base unit height on either side. Or slightly above to screen the work surfaces from the lounge/dining room and take it down to ground level where the hatch currently is to allow access. You would of course need to relocate the radiator but that shouldn’t be too much of a job.

We were going to have exactly the set up as shown in your photo, but with the breakfast bar as a feature so it was a complimentary but contradtong material to the rest of the kitchen and was mounted on top of the work surface with a small over lap I.e. 400mm deep I think from memory - 100mm overlap with 300mm overhang for breakfast bar. I'll try and post a photo of the design
