HELP! With the living/office space of my 1 bed-apartment.

Hey,

I'm looking for some advice (desperately) for my 1 bed studio apartment living/ office space. The apartment has three rooms in total, one bed, one bathroom and one living/office space in the apartment.. Naturally you'd think I'd spend the majority of my time in the living space. I don't. I spent it in the bedroom, as the living/office space is so uninviting/cold/unwelcoming. I recently went and spent a good £3-400 on bits and bobs from Ikea to improve the space but it still isn't there! I want to be able to live in it!

I've attached some pictures below of the space as well as some items at my disposal to try and improve the space from the bedroom including orange desk chair, orange wire ottoman type-thing, picture frames (about 8) - all different sizes and shapes, potted plant, grey rug etc.

Is the layout wrong, are the items wrong?! a combination of both?! What do you suggest?!

Can you do a room plan, with sizes and position of Window? I think you're going to have to section off the 'Office' from the lounge. Maybe you could use a moveable bookcase.

An 'Office in a Cupboard' is a great practical way of hiding the office for when you want to use the room in the evenings as a lounge.

The rug is too small. It needs to stretch from slightly under the front of the sofa to just in front of the T.V Unit. Add colour with it and a good thick one with texture.

Currently there's nothing above the T.V unit or the Sofa, which are at low levels.

Maybe hanging standard lamps to match, one behind the sofa, one in the corner by the T/V unit :-

Just needs a wee re-jig and a bit of 'plushing up'.

A footstool in a bright colour would also help to make the seating area look more comfy. Or an ottoman for the sofa with matching footstool for the chair?

Anyway, if you can post a room plan it does help a lot with the re-positioning.

Crisp white bed linen - grey tweed throw on bed - Gloss white bedroom furniture . Small Dining table for four ( that could double up as a desk ) and a grey tweed sofa and footstool - keep it simple - as cosy throws that can be machine washed. Black walnut flooring .... Maybe a pop of colour by using bright cushions to suit the season - cool blue in summer , autumnal burnt orange in autumn, festive red in winter, bright green in spring etc etc !?! .... Just an idea !?!?

I think your ideas are spot on for the space. There is a bit of empty space, but you can sort that by tweaking your plan just a little. In the dining area, you could try moving the table further from the kitchen and putting a freestanding island in between, to give you more food prep space. Or, if it's more storage you need, you could add a sideboard where the wall cabinets are, to store dishes, glasses, drinks etc. another possibility is to go for a large round table rather than rectangular. This would fill the space nicely. In the living area, I think you have space for a corner sofa rather than the two seater you have shown, with the sofa and the armchair forming a u shape. The use of a rug to zone the space is perfect. Maybe add a narrow console table behind the sofa? Also, remember that, once you have placed all your large furniture in the room for real, it will be easier to think of little extras to add, like lamps, end tables, plants, etc. That's the fun part! And by accessorising with art, cushions, throws, and all your personal belongings, the space won't feel empty at all. Congrats on a lovely apartment and good luck with it!

Thank you Thomas that's great - very efficient!! As the space has hard floors and walls it looks like your lacking in the soft furnishings side which is giving it the cold - office like - appearance which is sometimes a little uninviting. A rug will help soften the ground placed under a central coffee table. I would then consider adding some layers or textures and colour with a few cushions and some art on the wall above the sofa. Above the desk I would add a few short shelves which I would include a plant which soften interiors instantly and add life. This will also give you some great additional storage. I can also see two small ledges on either side of the room - this is perfect for some statement lighting with a strip of LED lights down either side. You should also look at some space saving furniture, There are so many brilliant ideas out there - ottomans that contain extra seating, wall mounted stools which would work with the drop leaf table idea previously mentioned (otherwise you have to find space for them when the table is not there). Also coffee tables that transform (lift up) into dining tables so you could actually do away with the one in the kitchen and perhaps have a slimline coffee bar there instead. I guess it depends again on how often you will use the formal dining table
