Help with curb appeal/facade on an ugly exterior!

Any ideas on things to soften the look of the exterior of this home? Potentially a purchase for us, but not sure how to help the castle-like look that's happening on the outside without major expense. Any thoughts? This one's a challenge! :) ETA - not interested in having to replace the window shape due to cost.

Looks like some landscaping closer to the house may soften it up. And some plants and accessories on the pork to add some color. Hopefully some experts will chime in.

Maybe not the entire home needs painting.. You could try painting the front door, garage door, or window sills to give it a nice pop!

Hi Stacy. I think weatherboarding will work for the look you're after. Would you paint it all one colour? My only worry was whether it would all be a bit one dimensional and whether the boarding would make the ground floor look lower ( I've drawn it out though and it doesn't seem to make any difference but that could be my lack of drawing skills!) I wonder if you could add a porch with weatherboard like this with either side of the front rendered and painted? The porch doesn't have to be as complex/expensive as this with the steps etc. I've had a similar size ŵall rendered and it was about £150 from memory so the cost would really be for the porch. Can you or your husband draw? Hello Sally, some good advice above and nice before and after pics from celerygirl. To give you an idea of what a part rendered, part timber clad 1970s house could look like, I've attached a before and after pic of a remodel we recently designed for a client (this was a 2-storey side extension, losing the garage and re-positioning the front entrance and internal layout). Decide upon whether you actually need a major change to your house, or just want something cosmetic to improve the way you feel about it. Re-positioning the front door, updating the windows/garage door and rendering/cladding might be enough? Hi does your budget allow for painting the render? If so I would paint an off white and maybe have the cladding sprayed grey. I would also pressure wash the path and have a good tidy up around the plants possibly create a bed beneath it. Adding a few potted plants on the deck and perhaps a sail for partial shade.

Definitely get some plants back in there. However it looks like your photos are before and after removing plants along the boundary so perhaps this isn’t part of the plan. Could you plant some low shrubs under the window and mulch them with gravel to suppress the weeds? Including additional areas of gravel where the cars aren’t generally parked would help to soften all that expanse of hard landscaping. You could then plant ground hugging plants, that don’t mind being driven over on occasion, into the gravel.

Add a crazy color to the trim and whatever that is at the top in the front. Embrace the castle and make it fabulous...and bushes in the front with flowers...it needs a turret tho.

It's elevated above the road and a massive concrete driveway funnels the view into the turret and the stairs that are perfect for Inigo and the six-fingered man to have their epic fight. Your best bet would be to cut 1/3 to 1/2 off the driveway's right side and plant some tall trees. Otherwise if you love the interior and the location, just live with the exterior and do some over the top decorating for Halloween.
