Comments (7)Hi Minnie, thank you so much for your ideas! I really appreciate you took the time to share them us. You've really given us plenty to think about. Toys and kids clutter seems to be a permanent fixture in the house at the moment, so your point on the mess exposed in open plan setting is something we'll certainly need to give more thought to. Converting the whole of the garage we haven't really thought of, to be honest. It would definitely give us more room to comfortably fit in the playroom. One possible drawback though could be lack of light. The only suitable location for the window would really be the current garage door, and that side doesn't really get good light during the day. However, there's nothing above the garage so perhaps a skylight could be a way? Also, I'm sort of in two minds about how separate I want the kids space to be. Sometimes closing the door and letting them do their own thing is really convenient and helps keep us sane ;) but ideally, I think, I'd like their wee corner to be a part of the family space so that we easily keep an eye. I'll need to mull that over a bit more to be honest, and try to look further into the future. I love the way you've designed kitchen/dining space at the back. It makes sense the two are linked. The cost consideration is a strong argument for sure, but the installations are poor as it is, pipes exposed in the cupboards, so will need to be rehauled one way or another. The reason we thought of putting kitchen units along the left wall was the light. We sort of had an idea of side skylights/roof lights at the side return part, and a bifold door on back wall opening into the garden. Something along the lines of the photo below. Does that make sense? I've no renovation experience nor architectural know how, so not even sure if that would work!? I would love to hear what you think if you have some more time to spare. Thanks again for your help...See MoreIdeas for the Advice section!
Comments (45)Me again! Can we also have a reader's how to section. Such as a designer showing in pictures how to stage a sideboard with bijouterie depending on style, or how to style a bedroom with accents, or even articles on how to achieve X,Y,Z on a budget (I'm sure Houzzer's will have an idea - maybe this could be a section in itself?) Articles on colour or pattern matching etc would appeal vastly methinks. Even simple things that can easily be found on an internet search such as how to prep bannisters for painting would give a more magazine feel. Also a regional links page for cateogries. These could accompany articles. For eg. an article on prepping with images and step by step along with a list of Houzz recommended companies regionally who could undertake the work or fix a botched job! Topics I would be interested in include: How to add value to your home, how to maximise light, how to achieve a professional finish decorating; interior design ideas; how to change the facade of a property; flowers for the garen, door way, flowers for shaded areas, climbers for shaded areas, scented plants, how to ensure colour in the garden all year round etc. Decorating/furnishing ideas to create optical illusions to create size/light etc. Thanks for asking. I love this site and literlly spend hours getting lost on it with a cup of coffee :-)...See MoreNeed help 'styling out' black/grey bathroom
Comments (23)Hi Michael, Sorry, but I have to partially disagree with you on this, daylight colour temperature is 6500K not 4000K. Yes, 4000K is warmer than 6500K but it does not give a truer representation of colour. Colour representation is measured using the colour rendering index or CRI. The closer to 100, the closer to daylight. The Megaman LEDs are 80 CRI for each of the colour temperatures. That said, the 4000K fitting will produce a brighter and cleaner feel to the room. However, it can look too harsh at night. 2700K is closer to traditional halogen fittings. It can look duller during the day, but looks a lot more welcoming in the evening - perfect for a soak in the bath. It comes down to personal preference in the end...See MoreI'm painting my kitchen and need some help!
Comments (10)Hi. I like your kitchen as it is however after 6 years maybe it is time for a change! Your idea of painting just the wall units would work, I'd keep them in the wall colour, not sure if you're changing that or not? I think the worktop is fine, it's reflecting light (and everything else!)! Another option is to keep the island in wood (also means avoiding painting wine rack). If you went for cup handles for example I think you could have 2 on each island drawer without leaving any holes. I'm not sure on the cooks blue with the black tops but the pitch blue may work although I don't expect it will alter the light situation. Have you also looked at little Greene paint? I rave over the quality and it wipes down very easily whereas I personally find f&b and dulux trade doesn't. In theory I would use satinwood on the beams although I have used emulsion on a couple of things that don't take any knocks to get a chalky feel and they're absolutely fine....See MoreMERIT HOMES
