Dark floor with low ceiling, is it a total no-no?
Comments (8)Hi. I'm not a pro so clearly may be wrong but I thought using dark floors, combined with very light walls and a white ceiling was actually a design trick for making ceilings look higher. Having such a contrast of the dark and light tricks the eyes into making the walls seem higher. I've attached a pic of my basement which is a lot lower than your ceilings (ignore my lighting over the bar table as this is meant to be a no no with low ceilings. Mine were just so low I went with what I wanted but it does show the contrast in floor!). Combine this with other design tricks ie wall lighting, low furniture, floor to ceiling curtains, hang pictures high, full height doors etc. if in doubt, do follow One Plans advice and see your space with different flooring options so you can decide rather than making a costly mistake...See Morewall colour dilemma
Comments (1)Hi. You could try a warm stone which would lessen the contrast between the sofas and ŵalls. As the room is light farrow and ball elephants breath should work really well. It will also go with the plum accents....See MoreHorrific fireplace dilemma!
Comments (17)Thanks so much everyone for the ideas. The room is a mess right now I know we only just bought the place so it is a total blank slate and we have focused on the living room and now are moving onto this room so I know it looks a state! I like the idea of velvet armchairs in each alcove and we are open to the idea of a wood burning stove as we want one in the living room as well. We were thinking perhaps to open the space to the left of the fireplace into the living room with sliding French paned doors and we are putting a wall and doors to the right of the fireplace into the kitchen/diner. The living room is in natural Hessian with pops of coral so we are thinking of using the same basic neutral colour throughout the ground floor rooms and varying the floor (having engineered wood in the kitchen, have cream carpet with a sisal rug in the lounge) so thinking about bringing the engineered wood through this room too and down the adjoining hallway and putting another sisal rug in here? I've seen a lovely white wood burner that I was thinking about for this room. Didn't think of plastering the inside of it (it is so black and horrible right now!) - what about whitewash on the brick does anyone know what that comes out like? Is it better than paint?...See Morev low ceiling with beams help lights!!!
Comments (12)So your suggesting wall lights and lamps only. No recessed spots or led strips along beams? We will be having tv unit in alcove furthest from window and a sofa facing fireplace just placed in front of doors on either side. The other half of the room will be a dining area temporarily. Will wall lights be enough and how many? I prefer symmetry in my rooms also. The ceiling to floor is approx 7ft. I’ve read to make a room look higher than it is uplighters are best is this so? If our plans work out the dining area will eventually turn into a quiet area with comfy chairs bookcase etc. My husband is not a fan of wall lights says it restricts you if u want to change furniture around. I love them but with a low ceiling I am unsure how high up they should be not just for best lighting but for furniture arrangement and if they are on a wall where u walk could be an obstacle? I have also posted about my spiral staircase but I put it in the topic design dilemmas but it is about lighting also....See MoreJenny Reeves
