Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Downstairs wet room

I am looking to create a wet room on the ground floor of my 1930s property so that my 4 year old son can access this in his wheelchair. The downstairs lounge will become his bedroom. I would like to use the under stairs cupboard and the side return as far as possible to create this space. Extending out of the back of the property is not an option. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Not sure how far you are through your project, but I would have thought putting a shower room where the old kitchen was would make it easily accessible for a wheelchair?

Thanks Jen P. We are just at the planning stages at the moment so very early days really. I hadn't considered that configuration at all so far so thank you for offering a different perspective. The only immediate concern i have with that would be that there are no windows directly into that space and it is quite a dark space particularly on dull days. Will definitely give it some serious thought though, thanks.

I appreciate that it is difficult to know without seeing the layout of the house so here's a rough drawing to scale that I have done of the proposed new layout to help - light blue line = existing glass doors to kitchen, red line = proposed new glass doors to lounge, black lines = existing walls, dark blue lines = proposed new studwork walls and lighting layout (probably will use downlights for maximising the light and lamps in the reading room as well). Hope this gives more of a clear idea of what we are planning to do - I say "utility room" but actually our idea is to do something similar to what OnePlan suggested utilising the understairs cupboard off the WC as a utility cupboard with the washing machine/tumble drier in and then hang a drying rack from the ceiling. The cloakroom area would give us a valuable space for shoes and coats as currently you walk straight through into the main body of the house and mess gets everywhere (we have a small dog that gets very muddy)! The floor will be tiled the same as the hallway through the cloakroom and WC and wood flooring laid in the reading room with the fireplace. It's a very good idea to ask local estate agents Man About The House so thanks for that suggestion.

Personally, I think the shower room looks a bit snug, you could practically sit on the toilet and wash your hands at the same time! I'd consider moving the shower room wall and eat more into the utility. There is also no reason why you couldn't have the shower room door swinging outwards. I think an external door is critical as it will allow you to take things like washing straight out into the garden or wet dogs into the utility. This door could be partially glazed to allow natural light into the utility. On a side note, is there any reason why the kitchen is set back 800mm from the shower room external wall? It would make sense to line this through and give you more space in the kitchen. I hope this is of help.

I must admit I would go for a screen similar to that shown in the 2nd pic by man about the house. In terms of making it feel more spacious then larger tiles typically work with the tiles run horizontally to the long walls on the floor and then horizontal on the walls. You could keep walls and floors the same or go for something different on the walls but with little contrast. I'd have a really large mirror on one of the long walls. A floating trough style vanity rather than floor standing. I'd also go for the shower head on either long wall so you can have a niche for shampoo etc on the end wall

should grey grout in a wet room discolour to black when wet?

I think it probably is the case just that it’s not really noticeable with white grout which is what you’d see in most swimming pools, etc. I have a beige grout on my bathroom floor tiles & that darkens when wet.

You may want to consider some advise from an occupational therapist to ensure the new wet room will meet yours and your son’s needs, including future needs. In my experience this could save you money in the long run! Many architects put standard measurements in, but aren’t trained in a person’s specific disability and equipment needs. If your local social services OTs aren’t able to help, you can look for an independent OT in your area.
