Anyone got any good ideas for making an ex council house look cool?
Comments (61)I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout ....See MoreHelp/ideas to make kitchen/diner
Comments (8)I agree with Jen P, if you need to leave that bit but the other nibs can go then I would try incorporating it into your design. it could hold a small breakfast bar style section on the kitchen side and art work on the dining side. Embrace it and use it to zone the areas. As Jonathan suggested, you need to start by working out what can happen with the walls and if permissions are needed, then when you start designing the kitchen itself I would look at how you can use it within the design. To answer your original question - Yes - If this were mine, or belonged to one of my clients I would make it into a gorgeous kitchen/diner that you can enjoy not only when entertaining but everyday!...See MoreAny ideas on lighting for this kitchen?
Comments (8)It's quite a small space so I would suggest that the pendants are no larger than 200mm diameter. Ensure downlights are centered over worktops and a good rule of thumb for a kitchen with standard ceiling heights is 1.5m's apart. Linear LED tape for under cupboard lighting - around 12watts/m will provide ample light and this could be complimented with the same lighting on top of the units. If within budget, pendants on switch A, Downlights B and Linear LED switch C - all on dimmers. Kitchens...See MoreAny ideas on the best way to achieve open plan kitchen diner?
Comments (12)Hi, you could knock through kitchen and living room - you’d have a lovely kitchen/dining/living space. Then have the existing dining room as evening lounge or snug. Depends on your family situation I think as to whether you want the stairs off this room. You have a lot of doors - blocking one or two of them off would obviously give you more wall space to play with for furniture. Alternatively, knock through kitchen and dining room together; and have a glass wall where I’ve shown, so that your stairs are off a new hallway. I saw something on Houzz but I can’t find it now, where they’d done something similar to let light in; think there was a nook for a desk or storage in the hall too. Good luck x...See MoreAndreea De Mirabela Design
