Type of fire

Hey guys,
What's this type of fire called ? When it seems like it's coming out of pebbles; is it just gas with a nice design ? Thanks !

The fire burns liquid ethanol. There is a small canister under the pebbles holding the liquid.

Just bought my first house - Victorian 2 up 2 down terrace. I knew that the front fireplace had been disconnected after failing a safety inspection by British Gas. Had a gas safe plumber round to have a look and he says the issue is the "flap" at the back which if closed could lead to carbon monoxide in the room. There's also an odd anomaly with the flue dipping down before it goes up. But I'm really confused because the same model of fireplace is being sold online (see photo) http://www.castironfires.com/ http://www.castfireplaces.co.uk/lytton-cast-iron-fireplace Anyone know of issues with this type of fire or what the problem might be?

There will most likely be a gas pipe running under the floorboards to that gas supply. You need a gas engineer to re route that gas pipe slightly so it terminates at the fireplace itself (not sure why it doesn’t already tbh). Hopefully this can be done via a cellar or crawl space rather than lifting the floor, however if boards do need lifting it probably won’t be many. Then you need something like a Nu Flame gas fire (like a black box which sits in the grate) as mentioned above. Nu Flame is a good brand, not the cheapest out there but good quality I’m told. Again gas engineer needs to install this.

I don't know if your opening will be big enough for a gas stove. I had a small one fitted a few years ago to replace an old gas fire. My opening was enlarged a bit so I could have it installed. I used a local company that supplied and installed the stove. They also did the hearth and chamber. You'll need to get the chimney swept, and may be able to use the exiting flue. My best advice is to contact a local specialist.
