Hedge Planting.

Is there any laws/regulations on planting Leylandii (cupressocyparis variety) for hedge screening and keeping the height to under 2 metres?

I have been informed by a gardener that if it is trimmed regularly and the height maintained to under 2 meters, it falls within the regulations and also the roots won't grow wild.

Would like to hear your opinions on this. Thank you.

Hi, as far as I know there is no law about Leylandii hedging height but it’s permanent walls and fencing that have to come under 2 meters (I think). All the same I would keep Leylandii trimmed at least twice a year without fail because they can grow monstrously big. The roots wonts spread too much but they are thirsty trees so if you have any other plants around them they won’t survive. Laurel, yew or privet might be better evergreen options.

There are so many other nicer options than Leylandii and unless you're a keen gardener they will grow faster than your desire to manage them. You should out of politeness, keep them to around 2m high if you live in town but there's no law until you start depriving your neighbours of light. I'd go for option A. I'd speak to the neighbour and try and get them to agree to you removing the ivy so you don't get further problems. The new fence should last 15 years so will still good by the time you move. I had the same issue with my current house. Spoke to the neighbour and neither of us owned the fence. I decided to replace it at my own cost because then I could choose the fence panels that I wanted and it was the simplest option rather than getting into a debate about it. Also, I had mentally prepared for paying the cost before I looked at the deeds and found it wasn't mine!

Photinia Red Robin..............great Evergreen shrub / bush. Lovely red leaves on the new growth which then turn green. You can buy these as larger or smaller shrubs depending on your budget. Pear Trees won't work, for one thing they're not evergreen and another it's a tree. Don't be fooled by this 'patio / dwarf' variety, all poppycock, they will reach their normal height if not constantly pruned. We keep all of our fruit trees to around 9 feet, but that's too high for outside a lounge window. We have our Photinias planted for privacy reasons, but we've got them as standard plants. Therefore, the light comes in over and under the head of the plant, but the head is around 5 feet high and stops people seeing directly in. This is exactly what ours look like except this is in a pot and ours are in the ground. I would have gone outside and taken pics ( maybe later ), but it's tipping it down again!

Thanks Rachel and Ribena, I’d never heard of Heuchera before but the colours look stunning so will definitely look into those some more. I thought a pic oft back garden might be helpful to give an idea of the type of look I’d like to introduce in this front area. Since this pic was taken I have 6 bays planted in the L section on the left with dwarf box hedge establish in that full section also. So really quite minimalist.

I have a variegated Weigela and it is stunning when in flower. The beauty of Weigela are the flowers carried on long arching stems in early summer. The one you mention is compact (1.5m high and wide) and cutting it like a hedge means you may lose all the flowers. You can cut it back after flowering. It is also deciduous so will lose its leaves during the winter. They are beautiful shrubs, but not a hedging plant as such unless you want a loose more natural shrub. Is that what you want or something more formal?
