This is not a painted finish. This is the natural weathering on the barn board.

Hi Cesca, as your kitchen is quite dark I would go for white cupboards and natural wood worktops, something like your table and chairs. This I would live without changing as I think they looks very nice. I would move the table 50cm from the kitchen cabinets and put some nice carpet just under the table and the chairs to make the space warmer and more cozy. I would paint the walls with light green and add some colourful details. White ir light grey curtains would also make your kitchen look special. If one day you decide to change the floor go for natural wood.

The cupboards are a peachy orange colour and the floor a yellow colour and both are warm so I wouldn't choose yellow. Does she want it brightening or colour adding? Anything darker than what is there now will not brighten it but may make it look a bit more sophisticated perhaps? She could paint one wall a deep dark colour such as Olive as suggested by Jonathan, or paint all the walls a stone colour that would complement the cupboards.

I wouldn’t get an electric sander to it as this might damage the veneer but I would use a hand sanding block just to provide a key for the paint. For black paint I can absolutely recommend this stuff: https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-quick-dry-matt-paint-black-500ml/p/0189009 It’s fairly thin but covers really well. Apply 2-3 coats with mini foam roller and brush for the fiddly bits. Top that with Wilko’s clear Matt varnish, again 2-3 coats and you’ll have a great finish. For a super smooth finish you can apply more coats of varnish then sand with wet and dry sandpaper (wet in this instance) till you get a whitish paste then wipe off and let dry, should result in a gorgeous finish.

Ha ha, maybe, but I doubt it. I’m not much of a cleaner. It could be the type of cleaner I suppose. If I use anything it’s either flash spray or a shot of diluted zoflora. We only painted it in spring. Our last house was similar and I definitely didn’t clean that as much as there wasn’t an ongoing global pandemic in progress when we lived there. Maybe my husband is using something else on it?
