Tropical Plants/Trees for 2" raised garden bed

Hi,

Hoping for some advice here. We're in the process of building our new home. I've got most of my garden sorted except for the rear left hand side where we are using the space between the fence and the retaining wall as a raised garden bed. I've attached a photo to show the space.

I was hoping to put some Foxtails there but the space is about 630mm (just over 2 feet) wide. While we're going to start with smaller plants, I'm mindful of ensuring there is no damage to the retaining wall. Any suggestions would be fantastic.

Hi original poster! I know it’s 7 years since you asked this but would love to know what you did. We are not in a similar position with a similar looking house at the back but even steeper. I know that a full extension and lowering the internal floors would be ideal but we can’t afford that and need a 5-7 year fix. Please let us know what you decided and why ☺️

Thank you so much Carolina, you've been a massive help, I'm definitely going for the vinca minor and I've got some bulbs coming up that I put in last Autumn( I don't seem to mind daffodills!) The garden was only landscaped last September it's quite small & I'd describe as urban, decking, slate & patio., I wanted low maintenance but had the beds put in so I could have some space for planting, it's all new to me but thorough enjoying planning what to plant! For flowers:- Echinacea has lovely bright colours and is a perennial and they can tolerate an amount of drought which may be useful if you don't have irrigation in your beds. Knautia will give you pops of pinks, mauves and cerise colours on tall thin stems, which sway in the breeze. Agapanthus are stunning but they do take a little while to establish and flower well. Cosmos give bright cheerful flowers if you want quick colour, but as they're annuals they won't come back and Osteospermum will give you great colours, but they also tend to just be annuals or very tender. For year round colour with foliage plants, look at the many colours of heuchera or even some of the carex grasses.

I’d suggested to think through a plan for your garden. Mine was a patch of poor grass a few years ago. With a lot of help from Houzzers and a few books with suggestions for small gardens, I created a plan. Even with that and considering my Interest in gardening, I lost about 1/3 of my plants to the clay soil over a winter. I could post a picture of my favourite book with suggestions on how to plan a small garden, if you like.
