Trailing plants for shady raised bed
Comments (8)Thank you so much Carolina, you've been a massive help, I'm definitely going for the vinca minor and I've got some bulbs coming up that I put in last Autumn( I don't seem to mind daffodills!) The garden was only landscaped last September it's quite small & I'd describe as urban, decking, slate & patio., I wanted low maintenance but had the beds put in so I could have some space for planting, it's all new to me but thorough enjoying planning what to plant! Thanks again...See MoreGarden help - what to plant
Comments (9)Hi annavall, yes the Cistus is in my garden. The raised pond is a recent addition and it came as a flat pack kit. Has to be painted before assembly so a bit of work, but the tank inside it is excellent quality, very tough. ill try and upload the pics I couldn’t upload yesterday! Ceanothus is gorgeous and there are many types, but mine is evergreen and will get tall, which I want. Another great evergreen is Viburnum, loads of different species, all with lovely flowers. If you have acid soil, you could grown Camellias, Rhodendrons or Pieris, but they suffer in an alkaline chalky soil. Comments (13)I think it could look really pretty but it’s obviously very narrow as you’ve said. I would therefore take inspiration from plants of the Mediterranean which are used to dry, ‘poor’ conditions. I did the same when I planted up a pallet which obviously is very narrow. Also taking into consideration your desire for evergreens, I’d suggest rosemary and lavender (think of the scents whilst sat there!) and possibly thyme. And interspersed with them- grasses is different weights and hues. You could then add some allium bulbs and agapanthus in between for some summer colour, but when they aren’t flowering you’ll have lots of different textures from the other plants to keep interest. Let us know what you decide, would love to see it finished!...See MorePlants suggestions for South facing raised bed
Comments (11)Sorry you said it was south facing already, silly me! Against the wall, behind the sedum, you could grow a Ceanothus which is evergreen and has gorgeous blue flowers in May, or maybe a Star Jasmine climber, but you will need to provide support for it (white very fragrant flowers in summer). Another lovely shrub is Hibiscus, not evergreen but has exotic pink/purple flowers in the summer. Under the window you could try Cistus which is a shorter shrub, evergreen, with pink or white flowers in early summer.. At the front of the border you could try Geranium Rozanne which has blue flowers all summer long. Crocosmia could be planted nearby. It’s a bit taller but stunning orange or red flowers which look lovely next to the blue. They would sit nicely with the sedum.
