What to do with this space ?

Hi, help required please...

What should I do with this kitchen breakfast area? It’s a bit of a dead space at the moment (cats bedroom !)

I have attached a few photos. Also the floor plan.

Worth noting the wall between the kitchen and family room is being removed....so unsure if I really need another sitting area in this breakfast area ?

Further to that the family room is being knocked into the dining room creating an open plan l-shape.

Help needed.

If you are coming in the house from the garage most of the time then you can have a look at what Americans call mud room. Maybe remove the wall between utility room and have a large utility/ mud room with lots of cabinets and seating bench/ hanging space etc . Or if you have kids make it into a study area. I wish I have an extra room, nice house by the way.

What about moving your utility and laundry room to this area so you access them directly from the kitchen? Also if you are making your kitchen open plan then you could put your dishwasher and space for dirty dishes in there so you don't see them from the living space.

Alternatively, a downstairs WC if you don't need an office?

How deep are the recesses? I don't think that they need to match, especially when you put in free standing wardrobes. Here's two we took apart and made to fit in to our recesses. We splayed the sides out, brought the wardrobe fronts forward and made extra deep wardrobes. They were Art Nouveau, his and hers wardrobes, so were not identical to start with. From the wardrobe front to the back of the recess is about a metre. Lots of storage.

Design rule: Never look at any small space in a room as separate to that space. Design that area into the room. The idea of bringing that area level to top level is ideal. If it cannot 'loadbear' play around with ideas to still do that, but keep weight low. Keep any addition of 'pattern' or proportions to bare minimum and connect that to the greater area. Any single item put there, eg urn will look random, we wd call them 'plonkers', put there because the designer couldnt think what to do with a space. 'Plonked' there. Remember plantpots atop manhole covers on folks' front lawns? The thing put there to cover the manhole cover up, drew your eye to a plonked item. Replace banisters with something to your taste. Do not make yr banisters a curly eye catching feature. You could clad them, or go to reclamation yard, or research banister options.

Thanks both for the replies! Nicholas: there is no dishwasher, only a washing machine, and unfortunately I can't move it by the sink as it would leave a weird gap (and plumbing is in the way on the right hand side). I can't move the doorway either (the radiator is in the way, and I am trying to avoid major works to walls/doorway). OnePlan: thanks, I was previously thinking about putting the tall larder next to the fridge, but it might make that side of the kitchen look too cluttered or unbalanced with two tall units in the corner (and that would still not resolve the gap behind the door, in the right hand side bottom corner). Please see picture 1 vs picture 2 (this is a very basic sketch, not the actual units). Very good idea about the infill - I have a decorative corner post that I could put between the 60cm and the 55cm units, to create a smoother transition (see picture 3 - please ignore the dirty floor, it will be replaced). In this case - would you run the worktop a few cm longer to cover the corner post/infill, and round/cut the corner of the worktop to the contour of the corner post? I'd have to check if I have an extra 5cm or so I could use up for this purpose. Or, if the worktop only runs to cover the 60cm deep unit, and ends there, is there any other way to cover the top of the corner post? I'm also thinking about creating a seating area, maybe a little bench on that side of the wall.... Thanks for reading, and any ideas are welcome!

We agree that this would make a great storage/pantry room with some beautiful built in shelves and cabinets. A desk area could work well as well if needed!
