Is there an app for playing with external design?

Hi I am struggling deciding on cladding colour and window style/colour for a new dormer. We have a bungalow with rear dormer but are adding front dormer. Walls will be rendered white and have plantation shutters. We are not sure whether to have grey windows or white but we will also use cedral cladding on the cheeks of the dormers so have a big range of colours to choose from. I'd like to use an app to take a photo of the house and play with colours is there a good one to use? Thanks

It's all about the colour of the render and front door. I would go for a dark paint on the render with a complimentary front door colour. Keep the windows white but think "Town House" look. The house is small so I'd go to the expense of using Farrow and Ball paint (often discounted at Bank Holiday time at the superstore beginning with H). Then improve the appearance of the windows by having window boxes, painted same colour as the render, filled with ever green plants such as a mix of Box and Ivy. We are going for the Town Smart Look here, and nothing can be more sad than a flower filled window box that needs attention. If you want an outside lantern then buy one that fits close to the wall like a "coach lamp" go for the most expensive that you can afford ideally in a galvanised grey colour. It will add considerable style to the property.

Definitely agree with Design7, the added bonus with fibre cement cladding are: - no maintenance (unlike timber weatherboarding or painting render) - insulation can be added between existing render and fibre cement cladding - an almost instant improvement by adding texture to a very flat facade The risk you face by going with a bold colour over the whole rendered front of your house is that being such a flat and (no offence) uninspiring property, you will only make the situation a lot worse. By adding the texture to the first floor, you can then go bold underneath should you wish to. The other option that no one has suggested yet, will depend on the construction of your house (might be concrete blocks rather than brickwork) and if you do have to strip off the render and start again, it might be worth seeing if you have desirable brickwork beneath it. If so you can either acid strip the brickwork to clean it off or paint the bricks. I would suggest stripping the render off the ground floor and either going for a rendering or cladding to the first floor. I can imagine for a contemporary look, off white with grey Windows and doors, or for a softer cottage style go for a pale cream and mushroom/taupe Windows and doors.

If it were my house I would want to be able to spill light into the back of the original living room, I think the playroom should move as it is a barrier to the garden, I think the square space labeled living dining is either too small for both or too big as a dining space, I think the snug feels like it’s not a proper room without a window and for me the hall and cloaks space feels too big. And personally I think even if you create a proper play room the kids will want to be where ever you are so the only benefit of a playroom is being able to close the door on all the brightly coloured plastic when they have gone to bed- but while they are up it will likely invade your space- A big cupboard would serve the same function. If it were me I would either stick to this plan, merge the snug and playroom to have a decent living space and include lots of storage for toys. Alternatively consider a minor replay and having a smaller playroom elsewhere.

I use HouseDesign which is a Free App on my phone. You could also use the more sophisticated RoomPlanner that has a subscription. Alternatively employ a designer or concept planner to envisage several layouts more cost effectively than using your architect. You could also post the entire plan on Houzz for creative input from the community. Personally when I look at the plan I think that the space is made narrower by the two sets of stairs and the original stairs obscure flow from the front to back. Perhaps having one set of stairs in the centre of the house creates problems upstairs but I would be considering it as it might mean you can build less square footage and make a cost saving. Additionally the largest reception room seems to be on the lower level with borrowed light and in my opinion perhaps less frequently used rooms should be there with the living room further up the house.
