Using split face slate in a shower
Comments (11)Hello Susienew, Must say that's a fabulous idea and pic! Love it!! So as with all stone or marble in bathrooms (maybe not slate) tend to be porous, so need to have a sealant and anti mould treatment. You can buy bottles of these which you roll on with a little sponge roller.. I have used marble so with Slate it may be slightly different.. I'd ask the supplier for any differing requirements there. I had the tiles done and then these treatments over the entire space where stone is used (to be on the safe side)... I think you can get special grout too- again maybe something different is needed.. and speak to a good bathroom fitter.. There are also specifics when putting in wet rooms. I also found that having a nice metal squeegee which you run over the tiles after showering is a good idea. These tiles are quite easy to find, I had a friend who had a few in her bathroom. Have a bit of a research and go and have a look in a tile shop too. Also good idea to get samples and see what colour you like.. I do think if you are able to do something like the image, I would say go for it!! I think they are fantastic, and you can mix these with smooth stone if you didn't want to tile the whole area like that. : ) )...See MoreNarrow galley kitchen with dark slate floor needs uplift
Comments (1)You'll get more responses if you repost this in the design dilemas bit. There's no images or dimesions to go from but here's my thoughts, bearing in mind budget is a big consideration: - Kitchen Leave the windows as they are, you can create a sense of light with reflective materials and light colours. Leave the slate floor - it's hardwearing and easy to clean You could try replacing just the cupboard door fronts, as long as the carcasses themselves are in good shape - if budget doesn't allow then you could paint them a pale grey instead to match the floor. Replace the work surfaces with a light counter top. Shop around for appliances - there are some great places local to me that do slight seconds, you can grab a bargain and often it's just there's a scratch on the side or top where you won't see it anyway. Bathroom There are some great space saving bathroom ideas out there . Some people don't mind not having a bath but bear in mind you could reduce your appeal to some renters if you take it out and you'll definitely reduce the property's saleability (this may not worry you if you're in it for the long term). Ask a local estate agent for their advice - they'll know the local market better. I'm pretty sure there was a story about the owners of this house, where they took the bath out to create this lovely shower room - I can't find the story but there's a link to the project below - it's a great example of how to do it well https://www.houzz.co.uk/photos/villa-refurbishment-glasgow-contemporary-bathroom-glasgow-phvw-vp~58208653...See MoreAdvice on kitchen floor - clean and seal travertine(how?) or replace?
Comments (1)Hi, you can get professionals to clean and seal your stone. You can also do it yourself, but I'd presume the professional clean would be better. I've sealed my own stone tiles and it was very easy. A simple wipe on then off process. From what I understand your stone is uneven surface. From that I think you can't put flooring on top without leveling it out. And considering it doesn't cover all the floor, I'd remove it if you were planning a new floor finish. But if your not fussed for the floor, and watching your budget, and plan to replace it at some stage, I'd get my DIY on with some stone cleaner and sealer....See MoreSlate hearth restoration advice
