living room ideas
I’m looking at changing the living room to add a lot more character It’s currently painted in Natural Calico but we think it looks a bit too creamy with our brown sofa and current furnishings.
We are thinking of getting rid of the curtains and putting in some white wooden blinds.
We just think our living room is boring and we have no idea on what to do. Any advise will help?

6 years agoThe side opposite the window is just empty wall - we are thinking of putting some frames or clock up there.

Comments (12)Hi Laura. Congratulations on the new home! Have you thought about putting the sofa on the back wall and moving the TV to where the sofa is? I think it would work nicely with the shelves. You can then add a floor lamp and picture gallery on the back wall similar to what's pictured with a tall potted plant in the other corner to make a nice focal point. I'd go for a pale grey For the walls, dulux dusted moss 2 is nice but check undertones with your sofa. Your dining chair looks more of a deep coral so would bring a little in for cushions (maybe white and coral patterned to lighten the sofa) and also some texture, a faux sheepskin is always good for a scandi look. You could then add splashes of green or blue for art etc. Some faux stems would be great on the dining table (I like cox and cox's eucalyptus in their glass bottle vase for something simple and they give height). Hard to tell from table pics but could you add an arc light to zone the dining area as you don't have any ceiling lights? I do need new curtains and blinds, it’s amazing how different the room looks in your mock up, it really looks great. Dimitry and London Stone are great colours, can you recommend an equivalent in the homebase own brand? I’m thinking of buying a bracket for the tv and moving the tv unit (can I get away with it staying in the room, or should I get rid completely?) so there is more room by the chair. If it’s possible do you recommend the tv on the wall where it is now, above the fireplace or in the corner where it was in my original pics. I’m so undecided it’s ridiculous! I also want to change the lighting in the room, as the existing main lights are not bright enough. Any suggestions on this? Comments (22)From what i can see your curtains look as if they‘d work really well with setting plaster or similar. You could consider cafe shutters and as the window is split have 3 (perhaps lower than those shown, I was just trying to find a pic with more than one window). I would try losing the tie backs though as they're probably better without for eyelets. i think a deeper pink ikat lampshade would work well, as in the 2nd pic, I have a feeling this may actually be a Ben Penreath room! Personally I would have the tv next to the fire with the sofa opposite and the chair to the right of the fire. Maybe consider an upholstered footstool with a tray on top for extra seating and a place to put drinks. Comments (4)To create some cosy - run with the console table, but a narrow one along the short wall as the door opens. If that has a wall sconce light, it can be used to light the table. One in a wood would bring some warmth, so you could go a blonde or a darker wood. Part of the reason you may be feeling a lack of cosines is it is a very stark space - with tiles, no drapes and modernist light fittings - so some texture will help bring warmth. Maybe an entry rug? Or a rug under the dining table? You have a lamp there next to the dining table, it needs something larger to sit on - a sideboard? This could be a modern piece to keep with a simple aesthetic, but again I would consider wood over a metal/glass or marble piece. 6 years agoDefinitely agree with the idea of doing something with the alcoves could use them to add some colour and some depth - what I often do is browse photos on house or Pinterest of different rooms and create idea books - I like lots of different styles but often saving multiple photos allows me to also see common themes of what I like more/less and colour palates as well.

6 years agoI agree with Julie and Zoe re the blinds, wide slats and tape give the appearance of shutters. Your ideabook seems to favour a traditional style and you like blue? I think you need an armchair, it will make the room seem cosier, this is from IKEA and the floorlamp is dunelm. I'd look at Egyptian cotton on the walls (2nd pic). Pick up the blue for sofa cushions with maybe burnt orange or a dirty mustard. I'd also add a textured throw over the arm of the chair, I might paint the wall behind the sofa in something like Hague blue and I'd bring the sofa forward a little and add a console table behind for lamp/s with art over the top. I like the idea of a neutral rug, sisal would work with the style. I don't know what your budget is but I'd be tempted to reinstate a fire (even if it's not a working one) and put the tv in the left alcove. Definitely add a plant or 2!

We just painted the room yesterday with Dulux timeless and it seems to have already brightened up the room. Although highlighted the need for colour even more!
We are a bit confused now on the type of wall art to go for? We would rather have framed prints. So we either thinking two largest vertical frames or a single horizontal or a gallery of frames?
And whether to go for minimalist prints? Abstract arts? Or something else? Would very welcome everyone’s ideas and thoughts.

6 years agoHi Sandra, I like the idea of shelves, maybe picking out the colours of your rug to help bring the room together either by painting picture frames or blocks of colour in frames and adding cushions, throws. I did this with an alcove with shelves that we inherited using the colours from tiles already in the dining and living room.

The room now has a bit of a coastal vibe so I think a rattan chair could look good and due to the open weave they won’t visually fill the room (they’re all from cox and cox). I might also try including some ornaments amongst the books, not necessarily these things, just an idea! A mirror could work on that wall or a gallery wall. If you went for a chair, it would be interesting to see how much space there is, perhaps room for a slim console or side table?

You're right, it is a blank canvas, you're lucky to have such a big space!
What about a narrow sideboard like this one from WEWOOD? It's a great place to store items, and offers a surface to keep ornaments or plants on top. And there would be plenty of space above for a clock, mirror, or piece of artwork.

6 years agoSandra, I can’t use photoshop in any shape or form so please excuse the horrendous images! Not sure what you’ll think of the ideas but the wall art is from west elm, it’s practically 1mx1m, it reminded me of pebbles and the copper picks up the orange so thought it could work? I’d add a brass floor lamp as before behind the chair. The magazine rack with shelf is Rockett St George. I think a tray table with a lamp would work next to the sofa? Notre monde do the most fantastic designs. I’d add a plant as before by the bookcase
