Poorly plastered wall advice

We are redecorating one of our bedrooms but, as the walls were poorly plastered last time, we are having difficulty in deciding how to tackle them.My husband has already tried lining paper but the finish is still poor. Any ideas?

If they're that bad then I'd guess you'd want them re-skimming or you'll always be looking at them and never happy especially when the light gets on a specific part.

I have to agree with Daisy - reskim, or you'll never be happy no matter what you do over the top! Good plasterers are not always easy to find (and tend to get booked well in advance), but I'd strongly recommend only using people who are recommended (too many cowboys out there who thing plastering is easy - it's not, it is a real skill and art!). Also, make sure you get a fixed quote and negotiate hard!

I'm no expert but I wouldn't expect it to still smell 'damp' this long after it's been done. We had our kids rooms plastered in November last year, it looked and smelt completely dry after about 2 weeks. We didn't let them sleep in there while it was damp, we swapped rooms, i happen to like the smell! Lol. but I don't know about health impacts. They were fully painted and moved back in the week before Christmas. Sounds as though you may have an underlying damp problem?

My understanding is that we had a penetrating damp problem in that area of the wall prior to the renovation - when we removed the tongue and groove as part of the renovation the wall just fell away right back to the brick. Presumably the external brick work in that area had failed pointing and as a result the wall became saturated. But this was hidden under tongue and groove for 20 years. That area (we're talking about approx 2.5m x 1.5m) had cement hard coat applied owing to it being stripped back to brick then top coat plaster. The other areas just had a plaster top coat applied to whatever was already there. So that area has more to contend with for sure when it comes to drying out - we have an area with potentially saturated bricks, then hard coat, then top coat. The condensation in the room is a secondary problem that is adding to the issues but not the cause of the problem. In that the condensation in the room is going to the problem area of the wall because it's cold. And as such the wall might be trying to dry out now we've had the pointing fixed, but the condensation is keeping it in a constant state of damp. Hence why the damp specialist said to manage the condensation and it will eventually dry out. I'm just wondering after being done for 8 months, and 2 months of managing the internal condensation environment, that we should call the job as well and truly jiggered and start again.

I had all the electrics re-wired in my 1934 house which involved a lot of channelling of the walls. The electrician then filled the channels a little and then I had a plasterer smooth it all over and make good. He did an excellent job. What makes you think it’s a lathe plaster? I don’t think it would be a problem for any decent plasterer. I would get some quotes and discuss your worries with them.

Hi there — I’m in a 1930s semi detached and I have two bedrooms that feature poorly patched over chimney breasts (one pictured here). I’m trying to figure out what to do. I have no idea the state of the chimney behind the plaster or how much money/effort it would be to re-expose it. I know from the home survey that the chimney stacks aren’t in good shape, so not something I could get working easily I reckon, would just be decorative. I wonder if it’s best to just have the wall replastered so the chimney seam isn’t visible and redo the picture rail and skirting so it’s less obvious? But then there’s still the old hearth to deal with... Anyone encountered similar or have ideas?

As a first approach, because re-plastering is very expensive....................one of my customer's recently had to have one large bedroom done ( victorian property, lime plaster ), but normal plaster used to re-do. the cost was 2K.

You could invest in a tin of Polycell Base Coat..........it's worth a try. The idea is that it covers cracks, and provides a good base for painting over. Polycell Base Coat

I'd certainly try that first, of course, all the walls need a good sanding first.

Thank you both so much for your help and I will definitely give the base coat a try. We were hoping to do this fairly cheaply but we may end up having to splash out. We are the worse people in the world at bartering though, but I really will keep your advice in mind.

Are you able to post a few pics of the wall/area in question? I know it may not be easy to get an adequate picture of a "slightly dodgy" wall, but a pic or two might give us a chance to see just what you are dealing with, and be better able to advise.
