Ideas to complete living room.
Comments (24)Marie, your room looks lovely. So nice to see a nice blend of new and old and interesting. I agree with the others to keep your fireplace. I am not a huge fan of grey but I see what you mean about the wall on either side of the chimney ... have you considered continuing the wallpaper across that whole back wall? The slightly darker background would also help the TV to blend into the background. You could also do something a little different and pick up one of the other colours ... a warm light green to suit the wallpaper would add some more life to the room (grey by definition is a 'flattening' colour re light etc. think if grey in nature ... heavy dead things ... mainly rocks/minerals ... good for grounding a room but not too much of it ... I'm not one for trends.) Grey and wood/brown are not great together so I would change the TV stand or paint it. I love the raspberry colour of your sofa, seems a shame to add more grey. Also a lively colourful rug and some original artwork on the walls will make it less matchy. It helps to add in some small flashes of random colours ... either in artwork, accessories or cushions ... a bit of pattern. With regards to 'lightness' also remember to balance the volume and age of things. The curtains look solid and quite heavy, the fireplace is solid as is the black furniture ... the chairs and table as they are off the floor as such, look lighter, the fire surround and light furniture covers also are lighter so it's a nice balance. When I bought new sofas I chose ones with legs rather than the type that went to the floor and it made the room look much bigger and lighter. You need both light and heavy / new and old ... antique/vintage/older furniture that's 'lived' tends to ground a room and new furniture lightens it so a balance of both works well. Have fun, and remember to post after pictures!...See MoreNo idea on how to furnish our living room! Help on layout needed :)
Comments (10)In some ways it’s good to have such a large TV. Let’s face it you are sitting a very long way from it in your lovely big room! You are wondering how to make the door end of the room look used. I think we are talking trade offs with the design here, in terms of cost and layout. If you can spend a bit of money it might be worth investigating how to design a new fireplace that incorporates the TV. Sounds horrendous I know, but because you have a large tv it might work, though you’d have to be VERY careful about balance in the positioning and get specialist advice on insulating the tv from the heat from the fire. You also need to consider how much time you spend watching tv and if the upwards angle of view might give you a stiff neck from where you place the sofa...BUT... this would enable you to bring Carolina’s room layout back towards the door, making the room look more occupied, you could then also use celery girls idea to put a sort of separate more intimate seating area in the bay window - two statement chairs and a little table, maybe flanked by a pair of enormous table lamps in front of the curtains to fill the corners and highlight the curtains at night....See MoreHow can I MAKE my living room a show room

Comments (14)Agree about injecting colours - at the moment it is a bland room without any focal point. From your photo the picture - whilst it looks interesting - seems to be far too large for this room, or at least on this wall. Swap it for a smaller one, and place it level with the top of the windows. Replace the curtains with colour, match the same colour or similar to cushions on the settee, and a comfortable (but not too big) chair in the corner. There looks to be some sort of chair there, which seems out of place. If finances allow it, I would also replace the coffee table, as whilst glass tables seem a good idea, they take up space but do not add to the atmosphere of the room. Good luck, and let us see what you do....See More- 6 years ago
