The rise of the porcelain work surface

We are inundated with solid surface manufacturers reps bringing in samples of sold porcelain work surfaces. The newer, harder, but generally thinner solid work surfaces on the market.

These have been born from external wall cladding which is being adapted for work surfaces, flooring, and back panels. Available mostly in 12mm thicknesses.

While these seem a great idea, most are a printed on finish unlike a quartz, so the pattern will not follow through the thickness of the material. Therefore your nice veiny patter will be lost on the edges and in the drainer grooves. Also the cutting process takes longer so generally they will cost more than a quartz. Let’s see if they take off.
