Hi. More photos of the whole space would really help people to give proper suggestions, so give us some when you can. You have white, cream, grey, brown and black, from what you've told us and this pic. The grey could be the only jarring colour, but we need to see more. Well, at least I do before I suggest the backsplash tile colour and style and size! You can have stoves re-enamelled, but it could look great as is. Cleaning? Oven cleaner, elbow grease, washing up liquid, proper scourers - for the inside, that is. An extractor fan on a traditional stove with a sideways flue is going to be tough. Normally, you'd put this in a chimney breast or what looks like one. Anyway, post more pictures (and reassure us that you are going to move those sockets) and then I'm sure you'll get lots of great ideas coming your way.

In our experience, the most critical point of a ducted extractor is the ducting arrangement rather than the extractor itself. For greatest effectiveness, avoid ribbed, flexible ducting, which is easy and cheap to fit but impedes air flow, make the runs as simple as possible and use the largest diameter rigid ducting that is feasible. Recirculating chimney hoods that are not ducted but just clean the air and return it into the room can work reasonably (though rarely as well as properly ducted ones) and may be seen as more ecological since heat is not lost, but they do little to remove steam and grease filters need to be cleaned or replaced often. Building regulations require all kitchens to have extractors (to avoid condensation), so sometimes we install an extractor fan in addition to a recirculating chimney hood, making sure the extractor isn't near the cooker to short-circuit the fumes and grease, since extract fans (unlike extractor hoods) don't normally have filters. Manufacturers' websites give acoustical information, and generally the bigger the cooker hood and the stronger the motor the more efficient it will be.

i think your architect should of been aware of this, the information i have regarding part F of the building regs is Part F says that where a kitchen previously had only a recirculating fan this can be retained/replaced if it is made no worse. However, I would always recommend fitting an extractor to deal with condensation. • Kitchen: 30l/s if over the hob and 60l/s if placed elsewhere so you can get away with a recirculating fan over the hob, it doesn't need to be 900 wide as its in a canopy but you'll have to duct this out of the chimney breast either at the front or side as there will be moisture in it. Then fit a 60l/sec fan on an outside wall, up to you if you use it.
