Building a Home Design Dilemma

joining two roofs

I have flat roof and now making new roof and want to join both at the same level. what is the best method to do that ?

Hi Daniel, The bearing of your property should not inhibit your ability to have a green roof, generally it just requires different varieties of plants which can thrive in shade to be used. I have no expertise in the type of plants which can be used but a good green roof supplier will be able to advise you on this. There are a couple of other things to also consider. Firstly the thickness of the roof will be thicker than conventional roofs and the structure will likely need to be bolstered to accommodate the additional load of this. Secondly consider the access and maintenance of the roof. Visually, green roofs can be a great design addition when done well, and can really enhance the thermal performance of your property helping it to retain heat in the winter and keep cool in summer. Bad worktop join - can it be remedied?

Is that the finished joint or has your fitter just left the worktops there out the way and he's going to come back to them? If it is the finished joint then its really bad and I'd sack him if thats the quality of his workmanship. That hasn't been cut with a router and jig, the worktop is all chipped, he hasn't used any colour matched glue, even with the worktop pattern its should still be a virtually invisible joint. If it has been joined together then unless its oversized you might be able to salvage it but I think it may have to be thrown away and new worktops purchased and fitted by a professional. You'd be able to see/feel if the worktop bolts had been used as there will be key slots routered into the underneath of the worktop, I used to fit one in the middle of the joint, one about 100mm to the back and another 100mm from the front, always 3 bolts on a 600 wide worktop. The colour sealent is also applied before the joint is put together as it makes a waterproof joint. Wiping a bit of colourfill over the top of this joint isn't going to fix that, it'll just fall out. Sorry i can't get over how bad that is, I assume who ever fitted this isn't a wren fitter or recommended by wren (I hope).

The image shows two slightly different floors and I don’t think that looks terrible. However the advice stands to consider an LVT such as Karndean for practical reasons you need a hardwearing floor in a kitchen and since it isn’t brittle like ceramic tiles, isn’t cold like stone, it’s say to clean with a steam mop meaning no need for chemicals, and it’s easy to make a repair if you ever managed to damage it (which isn’t easy).

One roof lantern or two?

Hi Lucy, I think that of those options, 2 roof lanterns would look better, but both options would bring in a great amount of natural light. I would want to create some centrelines from the windows and doors to define the centres of the lanterns. But then this looks like it probably wouldn't line up nicely over the island. You can have pendant lights installed hanging from the mullions of a timber or aluminium frame roof lantern, but if you are having UPVC or a contemporary frameless glass version then this would be more difficult! Your architect has handily included a north arrow on the drawings which show it as north facing. So these rooflights shouldn’t create excessive solar glare apart from possibly in the evening onto the kitchen area. I recommend that you get your architect/designer to provide you with a simple solar study to show accurate shadows at different times of the year at times that you regularly use the kitchen. My suggestion would be to create a strip of glazing at the join with the existing house. (similar to the image Bespoke Glazing Design sent above) This would bring the light deeper into the existing building, where the dining area is, and also allows you to place your lighting over the island and anywhere else more easily. A lot more detail is needed, such as the type of structure and the materials used. It may be best to talk to a local builder,Joining a new roof to and existing roof mid span requires detail and can be complicated to explain in a comments section.

thankss for the reply . My house is in remote area getting a builder or architect is not possible. I need a very rough idea so that I can tell my labours to do it. This is a small room for my mother with limited resources.

I'd install a new roof, you will need a structurally sound roof and continuity of insulation and roof finish. If you do join the two roofs you will have to make sure the roof junction is sealed otherwise you will have to relay the whole roof finish at further expense. You will need building control approval for what you are doing so I would speak to them also?
