I'm buying my first rug!

I saw a beautiful rug in Homesense that looked like the kind of thing I was after apart from two things. It was too small and a dark brown. I'd prefer a very light neutral but the finish and style is exactly what I would go for.

I've found the same rug but in a brown colour:

Thing is, I know nothing about rugs so have no idea what to search for to find something similar.

I love the decorating style of Sophie Paterson https://www.instagram.com/sophiepatersoninteriors/?hl=en - elegant, classy and timeless. Budget is £200 - I'm hoping that's not too strict. I have a lot of other things to buy for the room too.

Can anyone help me with suggestions?

You could search for viscose rugs. They are quite delicate maintenance-wise, but have the same structure and feel. The rug you like is 80% viscose and 20% cotton. For example:

Thank you Carolina! Having looked at those viscose rugs, I've come across a lot of horror stories. I'm a light furniture person (having loaned a sofa to a friend, I found out she was not!) so I'm careful and clean but I hate the idea of one mishap runining something forever. I'm coming round to something like this though. I feel like it's still quite smart but being 100% wool it might be easier to work with and much longer lasting.

Congratulations on getting such a beautiful first apartment. I'd definitely start with a sofa and 2 chairs, and NOT a loveseat! A lot of us houzzers are anti-loveseat. Two chairs offer so much more flexibility than a loveseat. I'd place the sofa on the wall opposite the fireplace. The two chairs would go in the window with a small table between them. You said you wanted a "big old sofa". I hope that was just a figure of speech as what I think you'd be far better off with is a sofa that is of a nice size, but not too big. I'd look for one with skinny arms so that you have more seating space which is what a sofa is for, after all! A sofa that is 84" long will fit in most homes nicely. Watch the depth of the sofa too as lots of them have gotten far too deep. I'd go 39" deep max. Remember that this is your first apartment, but not your last so stick with pieces that aren't too big. Pay attention to the size of the chairs also. I'd stay under 35" wide, and again with narrow arms. My recommendation would be solid fabrics for both the sofa and the chairs. You can have fun with pattern when you get around to a rug and pillows. You'll also need a coffee table, plus a table to go between the two chairs. I adore the faceted mirror table from West Elm below and would make it a must have. The coffee table below with the marble top is lovely as long as you don't spill red wine on it! suggest you you look for a flecked long pile rug in grey, cinnamon,cream or add Ochre to introduce a fresh colour to add cushions or accent ornaments in . Unsolicited advise , If I was you Id drop the height of the TV to just above eye level when sitting on the sofa. Looks too high at the moment.

Hi @picasso28, Choosing the right paint for a north-facing room is potentially a tricky minefield of guess work! The problem with northern light is that it tends to be cooler and harsher and it often brings out the cooler tones within a colour. If you're going to opt for an off-white, avoid anything with a green or grey base. Yellow based colours such as Farrow & Ball White Tie, New White or even something as vibrant as Yellow Ground can help to bounce as much light around the room as possible. You can also help by hanging a mirror to further reflect the light you do have in place. Alternatively, you could go the other direction and embrace the darkness to create a dramatic and cocooning interior. Strong colours like Brinjal, Railings or Down Pipe can create a sense of intimacy in a dark space. Thank you so much for all your comments, really kind of you. Read Interiors will take your advice and get a wall mounted headboard, will start calling upholsterers tomorrow to get prices. Daisy, yes I do have a vax from the last house and the newer models are much better than the previous ones in terms of drying times. Vicki thanks for the name of the stretch valance as I couldn't find them on Google apart from on House of Fraser but they have limited colours and were pretty pricey at £100 or so! Angm, funnily enough I had this conversation with the carpet man as when I lifted the 50 year old carpet I noticed there was paper down and he explained that was why. He said it was also a good idea to tape any joins in underlay as well as the carpet but said a lot of fitters don't do this. Forzaitalia and Sam appreciate the insights and very interesting given your experiences Corbridge Interior design interesting point re rug and sizing I am still torn!!!! But I am probably moving towards carpets. I think the pics make the floor look better than it is! Noise wouldn't be a problem as we are in a bungalow, which is why I am concerned about the kids walking into their rooms on carpet having forgotten to take their shoes off! If it was upstairs I would definitely go with carpet! Aargh decisions, decisions!

You can hunt for synthetic rugs too. They are often quite stain resistant and easy to clean.

Just throwing this (virtually) at you. Not sure if you like the higher pile, but it gets good reviews on Amazon and on screen (but that doesn't say much) it looks like it's close to the colour you're looking for?

Another good source for rugs is CarpetVista.com. I’ve bought a couple of rugs from them. Their website is very good in that you can search by specific size ranges and the pictures are true to the product. Although based in Sweden, shipping is only a few days.

I know nothing about rugs!
