Bathroom recessed shelf & tiling

Hello!

I'm planning on rennovating my bathroom ( 6ft x 9ft ) - on the long side of the wall, my bath will be positioned there in one corner and wash basin same wall on the other corner , I would like to have a recess shelf built for the bath area and above the basin. As it is a brick wall I will have to build a stud wall out. The wall is currently tiled all the way up to the ceiling, do you think I should remove the exisiting tiles before building the stud wall or just build on top of that? The bath will be a shower bath and I was originally thinking of tanking/ waterproof membrane on a small section of the wall where the shower area is to provide extra protection for the wall but if the old tiles are there then I don't need to tank the samll section of the wall or pay for the labour of removing the old tiles? What are your thoughts on this?

Removing tile is actually pretty easy do you could do this and therefore you shouldn’t worry about labour.
However unless you need to get to something under the tile (there might be pipes in the wall) you don’t actually have to take them off if you are going to cover them with a false wall.

Hi there!

I'm Adam, one of the designers here at Bathroom Eleven. We would usually always strip everything back as waterproofing is important to be done properly. And, as mentioned above, there may be pipes or wastes in the wall you may need access to. Better to do it all once properly, than find an issue down the line and pay twice.

I installed a mirror in a 1.5m wide x 850mm high recess, and it looks brilliant. I lined the reveals with mosaic tiles, although kept the cill in a white tile, which now look twice as deep. I also installed de-misting heat pads to the back of the mirror first, which switch on together with the flexible LED strip light which I attached on the 'ceiling' of the recess, against the mirror (having allowed for an electrical connection for both first, of course.) My last step still to do, is to fit a chrome batten to the 'ceiling' reveal in front of the LED strip, so that the light source is hidden and not as 'dotty' and bright as in this photo.

I absolutely hate those trim pieces. When you are spending hundreds or thousands on tile to do a project and then finish it with these trim products it looks cheap and tacky. Plus when you are using a classic or vintage tile those shiny metal pieces or worse the cheap white plastic doesn't match. Just ruins the whole thing. I suspect builders like this kind of trim because it fast and easy to use and covers a multitude of sins. You don't have to be a particularly skilled tiler. Nor do you have to do any special cuts.

Thanks, done it all myself :-) full schluter system, cost a small fortune but worth it, I actually dug my floor out and replaced it adding the needed slope to the drain! My floor tiles are from Brazil, sorry can’t recall the make but that was two years ago and I was in a tile shop choosing patio tiles and couldn’t believe the choice nowadays! They neatly look as if they have been in an old house that has been burnt in a fire! I love them but they are a brave choice tbh. The back lite mirror and led strip which down washes the wall with the shower heads and controls really is needed as the Pom is quite dark! Saying that I love dark walls too so it really does look fantastic with the strip light on at night even just as a feature!

@carolina LOOOOOOVE the wood effect shelf but sadly the wall behind the bath is an outer wall and cannot be 'carved' to create such a cavity. We will have a recess but it will be smaller. The strip between the tiles is a pencil rail, almost invisible but used to connect the two types. The only reason I don't have the herringbone mosaic all the way to the bottom of the wall is pricing. It is way more expensive than the normal tiles of the same range. So need to be creative but within a certain budget.
