Wallpaper under dado?

I'm thinking about installing a dado rail in my staircase and wallpapering beneath. I know dado rails aren't in at the moment, but my staircase is looking worse for the wear (kids and pets) and because it has a vaulted ceiling repainting isn't an option. I was thinking about putting the rail a little higher than normal. With the vaulted ceiling I think that would look okay.

As far as which wallpaper, I'm not sure at the moment. The ground level of my home is open plan and in the boot room area I have this wallpaper

Should I go with another paper from the same range? Maybe a paintable beadboard? My decor is very neutral with bits of blue here and there.

Here is the staircase, it does have three two storey windows which will complicate how the dado rail terminates.

I think a dado rail is a (timeless) lovely idea and I really like your wallpaper. I would be careful not to veer away too much from 'standard' heights.

However, looking at your windows (great to have so much natural light coming into the staircase!) I'm not sure how to best approach it.

Alternatively, would a handrail installed on that wall perhaps do 'the trick'?

With a bit of luck the kids will touch either handrail rather than the walls... maybe.

You can perhaps paint them in an interesting colour. Uhm, the handrails, not the kids of course :-)

A belated THANK YOU to everyone who commented. This is the final result. We're super happy with it. Room A north facing "through-lounge" in a new build, 3 bed semi detached house Paint Walls: Purbeck Stone, Farrow & Ball Ceiling: Strong White, Farrow & Ball By the way, the room isn't as long and skinny as it looks in the photos. Painting it all one colour actually made it feel much, much larger. We were really impressed with the quality of advice the F&B staff gave us in regards to colour. We loved Purbeck Stone from the minute we saw it, and being brave really paid off.

Hello Anastasia, I hope you are well. I love the Cole and Son hicks hexagon too and it does look absolutely stunning on the wall. The quality is great too. Both designs will create a WOW and look fabulous and the hall is the place to do it. Help choosing paint colour/s for hallway and landing space

Hi, I'm currently going through the same issue, Trying to find the right combo of paints to paint the hallway. I am looking to panel the part beneath the dado to prevent the ever so frustrating scuffing which occurs at sharp corners and am unsure on the colour combo. I was considering grey and white too but I'm scared that it may make the space feel too cold and dull especially as the only light will be through the door which won't be much. What colour combo's would you recommend to make the space feel luxurious and modern, yet not too clinical and cold?? I'd like the paint to be dulux preferably. what is the quality of Valspar paint like, I've seen it at DIY stores but don't know if it reaches standard of dulux? any reviews?? thanks

You could have an anaglypta wallpaper and paint with wipe clean paint? Although it does look like that top window would be right in the way?

You could go without the dado rail and just use paint (scrubbable) as below . The first pic gives an idea of how it would look with the top window

I hate the dado rail idea as I see it as very old fashioned (Rarely use the h word but got a couple of glasses of wine in me).
Personally I think a wipeable paint is the solution. I think you could have a painter give it a one over in the same colour paint to refresh it for the same cost as a dado.
