Kitchen/Dining room - opening up
Comments (21)Our house is almost identical in layout to the last picture above with the glass roofed conservatory, all open plan. We use the conservatory for the dining area, we have a little 'snug' area at the rear and and adjacent to that is the kitchen, and 'L' shape. Our conservatory just happens to be on the left not the right. We have a glass roof ( thermal - like this Thermo Glass ) and, not it's not cold. We have one radiator in the snug adjacent to the kitchen and one in the conservatory. The one in the conservatory is and electric one with a thermostat and only comes on if the other rad can't heat the 3 areas on it's own. This only comes on when it's particularly cold. We used to have a Twin wall type roof, and yes that was pretty chilly which is why we changed to the glass. We do have very heavy weight curtains that pull round the conservatory in the winter months to help with the cold coming through the glass windows as they are not thermal glass. I would add, that our conservatory has been up for around 20 years and 'posh' glass was not available in those days, so your glass may well have better insulating properties! This is the conservatoryKitchen through to snug ( excuse the mess, wasn't expecting to play homes and gardens at this time of the morning ) Snug to conservatoryYou can just see the curtains in the background which are still pulled, it's dark and chilly out!...See MoreKitchen lighting options
Comments (2)You can get colour change LEDs to create any colour and change to create different moods. Alternatively you can have more than one set of lights. For instance you might prefer warm white under your cabinets and plinths but put coloured LED strips above your cabinets. In a former house I had amber coloured lights above the cabinets which I loved. In my current dining room I have spotlights set into the floor with orange lights on a dimmer- they spill light into the wall and everyone seems to like the atmosphere they create....See MoreKitchen Dilemma - Two alternative options - which configuration works?
Comments (40)Just reading the comments and suggestions on here shows the capacity for lots of variations possible for a design in this size of space. Have you considered investing some time working with one designer - who you can work with to produce a layout that ticks your boxes and then shopping around with the finished plans - (this is the kind of service we provide ) it may be a bit less confusing than several people ‘having a go ‘ - although it’s always great to get others opinions on Houzz, and of course it’s lovely that they are offering you this help at no cost. But might be worth considering, as you will be living with the results for a long time! Comments (6)Hi there, I would suggest going for a contrasting tile rather than matching it. Otherwise it will look obvious that you didn't have enough money to re-do the whole flooring. If you are going to add new tiles, go for the same in a contrasting colour perhaps darkish grey? Or the same colour of the island units if they are a different colour. Kelly Hoppen is known for changing the flooring from one colour/texture to another in the same room. I would take this opportunity to make it into a design feature!
