Chrome light switches and plug sockets.

Recommendations please, a friend said she bought very expensive ones which now have been worn where the switches are used but the cheap ones from a diy store have stood the test.

Hi Karen, are you looking for polished chrome or brushed chrome? Brushed chrome looks good even on a budget and finger prints tend to be less visible. We’ve used ones from screwfix on projects with a tight budget in the past and they’ve been absolutely fine.

Thanks for your comments. I think that's actually a valid point regarding taking the colour of the wall the socket is going on into account. I think white might be the best option for lighter more gentle coloured walls, but for walls that are painted dark I can see that the anthracite or black nickel would work well as the white would stand out too much in contrast...but ideally I'd like them to be uniform throughout the house... decisions decisions :-)

We are having a mixture. Brushed steel in the kitchen to go with the appliances, as they are quite visible at worktop height or in the sides of the island. White flat plate in the hall and drawing room. White plastic upstairs. I agree that it’s better to get white plastic from a reputable supplier which won’t go wrong, than a cheap metal socket or switch which looks the part but will give up within a year, or be a nightmare to fit. Also bear in mind the flat plate ones require a deeper back box (35mm) so if you already have standard 25mm ones you won’t have the flat plate option.

I think it tends to look better if all sockets and switches match throughout the house. I would leave them and bring in warmth with art, accessories etc
