Hi Joan, the trees are Robinia pseudoacacia 'Frisia'.

Lemon for me. I decided on a lemon for my patio because I thought that even if the fruits turned out unattractive they would still have every day culinary use and they did. Quince and lemon marmalade to die for. If you are restricted for space or climate go lemon.

That's a sapling. Over time the bole will get much thicker and the surface roots will get beyond where the fence is now - but the fence won't last that long. Maturity for this tree is many years away. As the tree will be far prettier than the fence, why sacrifice it anyway? The beautiful mature bark alone will make it worth caring for. Something I can never quite grasp is why it is assumed, whether or not a plant is poisonous, any part of it is ever going to be eaten, even by mistake? For heaven's sake, are we becoming so neurotic we are about to cut and burn everything some half-witted scribbler tells us is poisonous? Even if true (it is but that is beside the point), what are the chances that even a child is going to be tempted to taste it? Earth certainly. Well, my kids tried when very small. Worms, maybe. Slugs or spiders possibly. But even the lowest leaves of any such plant are out of reach. Sleep easy. Leave the tree alone.

Absolutely echo comments above regarding raising the soil level around the tree, a big no no as it will mean at best the tree will struggle and fail to thrive and will probably eventually die. Decking is a good solution if you want to install a seating area around the tree, with planting around it to soften the edges. I would maybe look at a composite decking as it will mean less maintenance and will not become as slippery as timber in a shaded area, also if going for a contemporary look it can look very sleek, especially if choosing a grey or even black. You could also add in some lower growing shrubs, herbaceous, spring bulbs etc and create a edge of woodland feel to this area, which would have interest and create a lovely view, whatever the time of year.
