Design Dilemma Living Rooms

Wall art ideas..

Hello all

Grateful for some ideas with regards to this through lounge, we plan on painting the teal chimney to match the rest of the room but we really would need a splash of real colour/abstract art between the two chimneys to give some pop. It would have to be hung high owing to a nosey infant! Please excuse the kiddy mess!

Hi Naz, hard to say without seeing the room but I feel like the room might flow better if that whole wall was teal.

Thanks for your feedback. I would love for it to go on left wall so it is in front of us as we walk upstairs, however that wall faces the front door and that causes two issues: 1. the ceiling cuts the painting in half when standing by front door and you can only see bottom half; and 2. Because it has a glass front we just get a reflection of light rather than the actually painting. Arguably the glass could be changed but the theory is still better than the visual reality sadly!

I've generally found theres no truly successful no nail solutions to this problem. You almost always end up with some discolouration from whichever product is used be it tape, blu-tack or peel-off vinyl. My solution has always been to use small nails to hang things (obviously nothing too heavy). Then when I remove the nail at the end of the tenancy I fill the hole with a tiny bit of rolled up tissue. Just tear off a small corner of tissue and roll between your finger and thumb - creating a thinner 'point' to plug the hole. Cut off any excess sticking out. Finally use a white grouting pen to just dab over it. The end result is completely invisible - particularly because you're literally just looking for a pin-prick on a large white wall. Never had any landlords notice it so while it might sound a bit odd I promise it does work!

Have a Google for brass sunbursts mirrors, they are typical of Art Deco and come in a huge range of sizes and styles. Beware of so called art deco mirrors cast in brass with a female dancer in the frame, more Art Nouveau and they are mostly poor copies of the originals.

We will keep experimenting! We do have a nice mid century armchair that fitted in the original layout (currently being ureupholstered so not in the photo) so when we get that back I can see whether it would still fit or if it pulls together the original layout better. I think the long coffee table is too big for the room, so I will have a search for something similar but a bit shorter. The curtains we have are half see through, so close to Marina's suggestion (hard to see from photos). Plants are a problem with the bunnies. We used to have lots more in this room but there were too many "accidents"! With the sofa in the new position they can jump onto the dresser so we have to keep that plant free in current layout. Could look into some good quality artificial plants to compliment the real ones on the shelf. Any ideas on how to keep the TV from being too obtrusive? I'm not a fan of having all the furniture pointing towards the TV as the focal point as we only use it occasionally and would rather have a room that is more set up for entertaining- although it is difficult with a small flat!

Unless you’re just after a print I’d suggest you get down to your local galleries and have a good nosey. Speak to the dealers and even check out the art college nearest you.
Buying an original work is very rewarding; the provenance of a ‘local’ piece can be a real talking point.
Supporting up & coming artists is more important than ever and usually proves good value.
