rug underlay advice

Hi, we have a cold living room with suspended timber floors. I am hoping to do a bit by bit approach to retaining heat.

we have three rugs on the floor and want somehow to insulate them using underlay. most underlay is for carpet or laminate flooring, so just wondered which is best, and actually if its even worth it!
I'm leaning towards foam as it is quite thin.

We have this rug "underlay" from John Lewis, https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-non-slip-rug-holds/p112586 on a number of our rugs.

We got it primarily because it is absolutely the bees knees for stopping any rug creeping across a carpet and I can totally guarantee those rugs do not move!

Not only is it marvellous from the safety angle, it also gives a good bounce to a rug, without raising the corners (in fact it keeps the corners down) and I would think, it would add an amount of thermal insulation.

We also have a large sitting room, which has inadequate heating, with a wooden floor and a giant rug. So we have one of these under the rug https://www.amazon.co.uk/RugBuddy-UKFR80-Under-Rug-Heater-Economical/dp/B01LY7G9A6 it works brilliantly, you only have it on when you need it and it works well.

The only trouble is, when it's on, we have to tread carefully over the patchwork of our five cats who sprawl all over the rug. LOL

I think a navy rug will match very well, and I like your first example as it has a little yellow without being overpowering. I also think a colourful Persian rug would look amazing and bring warmth to the room. You can buy them second hand on eBay. New ones are pretty pricey. Here’s some ideas, they may be too colourful for you, but I thought I’d just throw these in the mix!

Thank you Sonia, that's really helpful - these are a bit more than I was planning to spend, but if they'd insulate against cold coming up from the ground they'd be more than worth the extra, especially from an environmentally-conscious perspective :)

All carpet should have underlay. It not only makes it feel nice but it prolongs the life of the carpet. It’s a shame that you were told that, but I was told the same for some bedroom carpet many years ago. The carpet soon started to mould itself over the floorboards and it looked terrible.

Love the sofa. A nice statement colour! I would work well would be some neutrals to give the sofa its moment. But a rug/ accessories that will complement the other bits of furniture in the room. with browns and golds. I would recommend a rug that has texture but plainer and lighter to open up the room a bit. But also a curtains something that is softer and bright and light as well. of a more airy and delicate nature over some blackout blinds.
