Dear Lynne,

I'm based in the UK and am not an expert on Florida plants. I'd say get some that can tolerate wind and (if you're near the sea) salt - Google coastal plants.

Another Florida gardening site with trees for hurricane conditions is http://www.floridagardener.com/monthly/hurricaneresistanttrees.htm Having trees can then help shelter the rest of the garden, but look at wind-proof ornamentals as well.

I would agree with pannacotta and take out the blue spruce. I would then get someone in to take everything out - the shed, the pond, the narrow path, the lawn, the odd sleeper demarcation across the garden and the gravel. You will then have a clearer picture of your space. With the conifer removed there will be a large space at the far end of the garden, and it will no longer suck the water from the garden. Perhaps include some pleached hornbeam trees on the right and at the far end to make the garden feel more private, yet allow filtered light in to your garden. You have a wall at the far end, which is a great feature. It looks like the entire garden is enclosed, which is great from a safety point of view for the children. A garden building/office is a great addition, but it can become a storage place. Before buying one, really way up the pros and cons of having one. I am designing a family garden at the moment with a garden office towards the rear, but the father works from home and really needs his own space - however, it will double up as a TV room/den for the kids at night. Work out the actual size of building you actually need, rather than just putting one in to fill the space. If the orientation is correct the right hand side gets most sun. I would, as suggested put pleached hornbeam trees along the run, and have a path to one side, along this run, perhaps with a dog-leg at the far end. The path would be in the sun most of the day and would stay clearer from moss, etc. You could incorporate an off-set pergola above a section of the path perhaps positioned towards the centre of the length of the path and climb evergreen clematis or hydrangea petiolaris - this will also assist with blocking out the building behind when seated lower and closer to the house. Perhaps split the garden then in to 3 zones: zone 1 close to the house becomes a paved seating/entertaining space; zone 2 is the centre of the garden, which would be the children's turfed play area, and then zone 3 at the far end either becomes a building or a hidden seated area for grown-ups with well-designed planting around it and a pergola attached to the wall to offer privacy and shade. You could even have a long table and benches for al-fresco dining, under a canopy of sweet smelling jasmine and roses. With good lighting, this space could be an enticing area. The Edwardian/Victorian façade of the house makes me think of a family cottage garden with a contemporary twist (with veggies and cut flowers grown together). Flowering shrubs, bulbs and perennials will help to soften the walls (but remember, the walls can be a great feature in themselves). This may sound like a lot of upkeep, but with the right choice of plants you only need to spend c. 1 hour a week to keep on top of things (a little more in the winter to tidy things up (but not too tidy, i.e. leave flower seedheads and grasses for winter interest)). But remember to keep planting close to the house low with the line of sight from indoors to outdoors, so that you can keep an eye on the children. This is a great space to have. Have fun and enjoy it.

If you want to replace your ash tree with something that won't grow too large you could try a white-beam, it's a deciduous tree, will grow to around 20 feet high and has pretty leaves that are a silvery colour underneath. Trees like silver birch can be great in narrow gardens as they don't cast too big a shadow. We have a sout&west facing garden but it was always in the shade because of a huge ash and a very wide yew tree... They've both gone now the whit beam made an excellent replacement. Be careful with lelandii, notoriously difficult for you, or your neighbours to grow anything in its shade or beneath it as it sucks up all the moisture from the ground, it can cause heated disagreements. It will require a lot of maintenance to control it but also make your own garden feel very narrow, which may not be a problem of you have an unusually large garden for a new build. How about topping a fence with trellis and growing some climbing shrubs, a much softer look, perhaps some scented things like honeysuckle or roses, and with the benefit of being able to plant underneath. If you like the sculptured look grasses in a raised bed look great, there is such a variety and they are pretty low maintenance. If you choose to have a sandpit for your child/ren remember it will need a cover or all the cats in the neighbourhood will claim it! A seating area that you can get to without walking on grass is essential or you won't use it as much as you could if it's been wet weather, be really aware of where the sun falls in your garden, don't have that area too near the house if your garden faces North/east or you'll miss out most of the year. There is something to be said for not doing too much to a garden before you've spent a whole year there to see just how much sun it gets, depends how keen you are to get on with it though!

We moved hundreds of pots of plants when we moved. I'd already been potting cuttings up for two or three years and also buying shrubs to grow on. All the work to our house and the landscaping to the garden took much much longer than expected and many plants have had to be potted on several times, which adds to the work. We are at the planting stage this year, three and a half years after buying the property and six months after actually moving. It's hard work growing your own mini nursery! You needs loads of space for a start, racking and shelving for smaller pots so you can keep an eye on them without bending down, and space for all your bigger pots and plants to line up. The major problem is watering. You need to know the water requirements for each plant so you don't over or under water, and remember that when they outgrow their pot water requirements increase. Automatic watering systems don't help as they can't think for you. You'll find yourself jigging things around to find space for the new additions. All these plants are a temptation to rabbits and deer too so you might need to consider an enclosure. And this doesn't just happen while you're creating your nursery but also at the other end before you can plant. Believe me, builders and landscapers take up a lot of space, spread themselves around and you have to keep your plants safe from them... shade is a requirement for many plants, or even to help save some watering when the weather's hot but the converse is that they can then dry out too quickly as they don't catch all the rain. So you find yourself lugging and shifting your pots as the seasons change. Then there's protection in winter for all those exposed pots. A poly tunnel or early erection of a greenhouse is useful. What happens when you are away or have a holiday? Days of wondering if your plants are OK, is it raining, what will happening during the forecast gales, is it too hot, can you trust your designated watered to take the care you do, they don't know such and such a plant needs only a drop of water as it's freshly repotted and another a gallon a day as it's a guzzler... You'll lose plants from excessive wet in winter and drought in summer as some just give up from the extremes they necessarily have to suffer. On the other hand some plants will do brilliantly and it does make a difference when you start planting to have bigger things, plus the pleasure of knowing you did it yourself. Lugging them all and placing them in their ne homes takes more time than you envisage. Then when you start planting you must have a planting plan as will need to place all your feature and focal plants first. These will of course be the biggest ones and so your small ground covers, perennials, rock plants etc have to hang around in their pots even longer. It works but to be honest when factoring the costs of potting on, extra pots as you will never have enough of the right size no matter how many thousands you might think you have, losses and sheer hassle it might actually be cheaper to wait until you are ready to plant and buy in. If you love your plants and feel you have the time do it, believe me it will take up far more time than you envisage, if you can't cope with the hassle don't. One final and very important point. Label, label, label. Good strong labels, good permanent marker, check they haven't fallen out, been tugged by birds. You need to know your plants so you can recognise them if the labels do go missing and they are slow to green up after the winter. Good luck!
