If you are disabled. how can you get up when you fall

My mother recently had a fall and waited for three hours for the ambulance service to help her up. Would a hoist have helped or can anyone suggest anything else she could buy to keep at home. She is approximately sixteen stone and lives with my Dad who described himself as , 'a weak old man' as he couldn't help. She has had both her knees replaced so rolling over onto them, wasn't an option.

I don't know if something like this may help. It's supposed to used in the bath, but could work if your mother could get herself onto it.

I have one for using in the bath and we also have taken it on holiday with us (when I've used it in both baths & showers), just packed in our large suitcase (I've taken the side "wings off" which makes it easier to get on and off in the shower).

It's less than 10kg so your dad could move it without difficulty, I would say.

It is worked by a precharged handset, which is just plugged in to recharge - so the chair doesn't need to be plugged in to any electric to work, so providing the handset is charged, the chair should rise and lower, so can be used anywhere.

It's quite stable, but can feel a bit wobbly in operation but not worryingly so.

It may not be a perfect solution, but may help.

Personally I feel if there is going to be any assistive equipment installed in your parents house to assist in any falls, it needs to be used correctly for safety - if hoists are used incorrectly they can be dangerous rather than helpful. I don’t know if your mother has any particular medical conditions but if she falls frequently it may be worth seeking advice/assessment by an occupational therapist/physiotherapist on any equipment which may help improve her safety at home.
In my line of work I regularly visit elderly people in their own home and have never seen a hoist - it is usually something only present in hospitals or care homes for people who are bedbound/immobile.

Whether it's morning, afternoon or evening, after being full body tackled by the dog, I immediately go to my bedroom and change into pj's. I've done this since I was a young teenager (over 25 years ago). I never wear 'outside clothes' inside unless I'm imminently expecting guests!

I was 24 and my husband to be 32, back in 1978, we paid £19,500 for a 3 bed terrace in south London. Our eldest son bought in 2001 when he was 19 and on a small Royal Navy salary whist at university, sadly he sold it to pay for his wedding and hasn't got back on the ladder since. Our middle son bought aged 23 and our daughter with her then boyfriend bought their first flat at 21 and 22 straight from university in 2008 with one of the last 100% mortgages, they move next week into their third property aged 29 & 30. It's always difficult to get on the ladder but the sooner you start the better. We all live in Surrey by the way and nobody has been funded by the bank of mum and dad.

Weekly? Oh, how I wish it were only weekly. I'm out there nearly every day culling the three-cornered leek that has reappeared as a thick blanket despite me culling it in the first spring I was here, in my new house, then finding it had reappeared hugely aggressively last year and now, in my third spring, it's even thicker and even more widespread - and is now not only in the flower beds but also in the lawn, thick along the edge, scattered within it. Front and back. It takes about two hours to clear about a square yard - digging under the bulbs; banging off the (very good, I've been told) soil in which there are always several earthworms which I need to hang on to (obviously); then picking out the tiniest bulbs left behind. I don't think I can ever finish it this year - as happened last year - which means the problem will go on for decades. I don't really have the time (I need to work, I need a life beyond digging and clearing). The only solution I can think of is to bring in help but my budget won't allow that. I value having lawn so paving it over isn't an option. I will have less planting space, which will eventually mean less weeding, but it's not something I can do right now - I've too much to do to bring the indoors up to date. I disagree with Jo DP. The previous owners had a keep it wild policy and now I have this big problem with a massively invasive plant. And, yes, I have tried using it in recipes - it really isn't worth the effort of keeping it under control (to have a limited supply). I'm an experienced and adventurous cook and three-cornered leek is an overrated ingredient, even though it's free and in my garden.

I’m at my desk in the family room and my husband has set up office in the dining room. Teenage son is studying in his bedroom and daughter is home schooling between my husband and I - depending on who has meetings etc and is most available to help. She’s using an ottoman for a desk with footstool to sit on when with me and is at the opposite end of the dining room table when she’s with her dad. My top tip is to clear all work/study/school stuff away at the end of every day to give us our home back again. I put my laptop etc into my rucksack and stash that away in the cupboard and my husband and daughter have a drawer each that I cleared out in the dining room sideboard at the start of lockdown, for all their school and work stuff. When I’m finished working, I open the windows to let all the work vibes out, light a lovely smelling candle and I’m home.

Ah bless her - that’s awful for your mum. I hope she’s recovering well now. I have seen a blow up solution before - I’ve tried to find it online - basically its flat for the person to shimmy on to at their own pace - then the pump is switched on to inflate into a wedge shape to help support them and get them into a better position. I think it’s more to get them more comfortable while waiting for help than to actually get them into an upright position - but if you can find one - it might be useful if this happens again .
