Design Dilemma Kitchens

Hi! I have a problem with my apartment's kitchen layout. My kitchen table is located beside the window. Induction cooker will be placed at the left side of the sink. the provision for exhaust is located at right side. Do I still need range hood if the cooker is located beside the window? Where can I put it, if there's a window? Thanks.

Why are you moving the cooker from the right to the left it the extraction is already in place? Plus, cooking in front of a window is a little odd as you won't be able to have a splash back.

I don't know the dimensions of the space, but this is more what it should look like. I personally wouldn't have had the sink so close to the cooker, and it is the sink that needs moving not the hob.

In my opinion an extractor is invaluable to limit cooking smells in your home.
You could put the hob under the extractor vent. You could put industrial style overhead ducting to connect an extractor between the windows to the vent.
You could have a deeper worktop and a pop up extractor.
You could continue the boxing for the extractor vent above the windows to allow you to have an extractor elsewhere. This is what I would do.

I would also consider if it is better to put the kitchen in the left hand corner where there are no windows and to move the sink to allow a dining area close to the main door.

Hi Aggie and Dytecture, I love the Dytecture kitchen photo but think the ceiling is higher than 11.5 ft. In my case I have concrete beam/ lintel at 8 ft height so if I put sink below the window then the window height is not more than 4.5 ft from the sink top up to the beam . I have kept window width 5.5 ft to have some space in the corners. All other windows in the house are 8ft tall from floor. Please suggest . All ideas are welcome.

I think you can transform this kitchen on a low budget to tide you over for the next couple of years. I would do the following: Try painting a sample tile to see if it will properly accept paint. If so, I'd paint them a very pale cream to make them disappear, and remove the large section of tiling altogether near the door. Wipeable paint should be sufficient here. I wouldn't change the door handles - your ideas for bringing in a few industrial styled items will work quite well even if you keep these. Industrial style bar stools (black metal and wood) + black metal industrial style lighting will have great impact on the room and tie in with the cupboard handles and radiator you already have. Photo wall on the end wall behind the breakfast area is a nice idea - just be careful how you place the frames so they don't conflict visually with the lighting you choose when you are standing at the other end of the kitchen. You could actually do this photo wall over your nice charcoal coloured radiator instead to avoid visual clashes with the light fitting. I would go for a group of photos all in the same frame finish to keep it coherent - just modern slim black frames to link with the metal on lights and bar stools. Windows - if you are not overlooked I'd leave them without blinds. It is more in keeping with the pared back industrial style you are leaning towards. Are you happy with the colour of your walls? It might just be the photo but it looks a little on the dark side - and I'm not sure grey really sits with cream very well? You could paint the walls a lighter colour - maybe something similar or the same as the tile colour you choose which will make those tiles disappear even further. Perhaps there is a tendency for many of us to try to include grey with existing schemes because it is strongly in fashion when in fact it needs careful planning to avoid it either clashing or looking too cold. (just what I've observed from experience)! If you are planning on revamping the whole kitchen in a couple of years I think doing these small changes will satisfy you as to the existing with very little outlay. If the things you choose to buy now are going to be used in the new kitchen too you won't feel as though you've wasted too much time and money now. Hope some of these ideas might perhaps be useful- I don't profess to be a professional but I really enjoy interiors and making things work!

Can you change the window to make it shorter to allow the worktop to continue? I assume not, in which case I would do what the architect suggests as it'll look better and you're not losing that much space. But I think I would make that final unit much narrower so that you do get a bit more worktop space. Or leave a space instead of a stupidly narrow unit, and just accept the space - sometimes if there's a space it gives the feeling of more space, whereas if you cover up part of the window it will look like you were so desperate for space that you made a sacrifice. Another option would be to build out the windowsill to cover the space and build some custom shelves or a storage unit underneath it - would be a nice spot for a cushion (to give the illusion of it being a little seating spot) or to have a collection of plants/herbs or something.

Thanks for sharing your kitchen layout. The north facing bay window is at probably the best position, however I'm sure you may feel like one or two more windows would add some multidirectional sunlight, and you are right. Given where you have your cooktops though, i dont see too many options. One that i could think of is a fixed sash somewhere to the lower end of the side with the cooktops. That would add some light at sunset so if you have some siting or bar at the island. If you dont mind some more level of remodeling, I could see how moving the cooktop even along just the cabinets at the edge could open up some more chances to work with one large window to the west side. Different countries have different build codes regarding placement of cookers and hob tops etc . As this dilemma has popped up on the UK thread - the advice given so far is relative to UK - but I can see from the electric sockets that this project isn’t in UK - so I’d advise that you ask a pro who is local to you to help out on this one !
