Narrow Utility?

I am thinking about having a long narrow utility with 600mm base units along one wall and nothing along the opposite wall. Can anybody advise what's the minimum practical gap between the units and the wall opposite? There will be a door outside at the end of the room - a bit like the picture above.

The space required differs if the laundry appliances are low level or raised .
Aim for a min of 900mm walkway/crouch space if you have low level and a min of 700mm if high level. Remember you have to be able to get these appliance out to service /replace if they break.

Hi Jonathan, sorry life got very busy there for a while! We actually already have glass doors opposite the front door into the kitchen and intend to add a sizeable rooflight in the study so perhaps we will be reasonably catered for in terms of light despite any porch addition. A fresh thought on layout came to but I've had zero time to get acquainted with floorplanner or an alternate piece of software to draw it out. I will endeavour to manage this soon. It basically involves reducing the size of the existing utility so the small hall becomes twice as wide. Then closing off the hallway at this end so this is in effect a galley off the kitchen with pantry style units leading to a door at the study end allowing ease of access from kitchen to garage conversion. Hard to explain fully and it's benefits as we see them without a drawing so I'll work on that!

In your kitchen plan the space between the wall run and the island is massive - maybe 1.3 or 1.4m? It should be more like 1m otherwise you will find the two surfaces are inconveniently far apart. That also means there is more space for a dining table than it looks like from your plans. Do you have a cellar? If not then the understairs space is available for a WC, you might need to carve a small corner out of the kitchen to add to the understairs space depending on its size. Or if you do have a cellar the wc can go where Jonathan has put it (entrance can be from the understairs area if you have the height, or from the kitchen if not). Is there somewhere upstairs you could put a laundry room/area? In or near a bathroom perhaps?

Hi Tilly, I wanted to draw attention to the living room sofa's vicinity to the bi-fold. You'll be doing a side-shuffle to access the handle to open it up. An additional comment is the side access to your utility space, from the seating area. It is a design and navigational flow detail that may seem superfluous but if you have the space in the utility room to revise this, I would suggest to have access through the kitchen i.e a full length kitchen cabinet that opens to reveal access to the utility room. High enough not to have to crouch - so depends on your height. You also need to be able to see into the soap dispenser.
