Ceiling Insulation

I note that you have insulation between the joists in this picture. Did you paint over the insulation or remove it? We are doing a similar project and would like to insulation between the floors. Appreciate the info.

Hi Judy, the insulation was removed on this project.

Hi. I got a quote for the under board hammock solution, which although I now can't remember the costs, I do remember I dismissed it as too much! So we went with the glue/sawdust option. There are still some draughts in the winter where the boards meet the outside wall, but in the cold months we put a kovely, large rug down...which gets the cats' approval too. We did the same in the bedroom above, just with smaller area rugs, which give the 'country' look I like. Our rooms are not enormous and with good heating we are certainly toasty enough, so it depends on just how draughty your rooms are and if you do/don't like the rug idea...if you have the budget you might prefer the hammock approach. Good luck with your renovations...we're tackling the kitchen/utility now...granite work tops arriving tomorrow!

Stand your ground! He is your builder and you are the one paying him. He knows what's required, and he should be doing things correctly. As you mention, the area is above your bedroom ceilings and therefore, if it were to remain uninsulated, this would lead to heat loss from the house. I would expect that he would be putting in celotex ( Kingspan ) under the roof rafters and also between the ceiling joists. Infact, the last one i did, i also put another layer against the stud wall to prevent the heat loss from the new bedroom further. Here is the link to Kingspan's published literature, on page 10 it tells you about the requirements for new lofts. I would imagine that there are plenty of Building Regs that you also have to adhere to, so for any doubt, please contact your local council and they will let you know about insulation and fire risk requirements, after all, they are the ones that 'sign off' on your project. We had the same roof in our kitchen dining area. It was painted white though. I did like it, but we wanted more light and added Velux windows. Best decision ever. Even though they are difficult to clean. If you do consider having windows in the roof, the self cleaning glass doesn't work, so you can save money on that. At the same time we've also had the ceiling insulated and plastered. Added downlights too. Haven't regretted it.

hi Suzzane, I think that your neighbour has a couple of options. lift the floor boards and place battens between the joists and place a layer of soundblock plasterboard between the joists. It needs to be fitted tight and filled before the floorboards are placed back on the joists. a layer of rock wool sound insulation below the layer will further increase the effect, but it depends on what is in the void. the other is to pay for you to drop your ceiling and have a independent resilient ceiling installed below the existing that can isolate the noise. again the use of a layer of insulation in the floor will help. They probably wont want to do this as the costs will be high, but you have rights over the added noise nuisance this will cause. There are propriety systems that can be used for both systems.
