bifolds - black or anthracite?

Extension is going up so just have to decide on the bifold colour. South facing - 6m of glass.
The kitchen will be off black (v dark grey) with grey worktop and wood effect floor with brickwork back wall.

I was originally going with black to add to the industrial feel I want in the kitchen but worried it might be too much/too harsh so now considering anthracite as it seems fairly dark as well?

Any thoughts?

Grey will look nicer from the outside as the roof if concrete grey but black is more neutral inside.

I really wanted crittall style and tried my best to get it and work it within the budget but the bifolds worked out just so much cheaper unfortunately :0(
The OH is stressed because the whole thing has gone over budget as it is so expanding the doors from 3m to a 6m span increased the cost significantly and meant we have had to cut down on certain luxuries we wanted. Crittall was one of those :0/

But yes, I do love the black and as the kitchen is mostly dark grey I think it will contrast better

I like both of them personally so it's hard to decide, haha. I wonder if people who have the anthracite feel they are not 'too' grey so it's the best of both colours. Some I have seen are a mid grey but some anthracite looks very dark?

Hi Patricia Suarez, Thanks for posting. Our bricks were re-used and the garden is quite small so some added light from the render would help. I have seen some projects with just the bricks but they tend to have big/long gardens and lots of light too. We don't have either -so def need the render and some extra light.

Sliding doors are proving very popular at the moment as they can stack to one side and not protrude into the garden space and be easier to move than full set of bi-folds so that would an approximate opening of about 4m with 3 x 1.250m (plus frame ) panel of glass that would all stack in parallel inline. Or you could try panoramic doors they are more versatile as they are detachable from each other and give you more options for you layout at the finish. There a tutorial on you tube ? Do you have building control on these works as I am finding that architects are making us use a lot more steel as in a goal post design for stability, depending on how wide you want to go with the opening?

Thanks Everyone. E D...the anthracite wall you can see is still waiting for external skin of block work and rendering. In Scotland, we build with timber frame which is why we can do this...all the insulation is on the inside!!

Hi Katie, have decided to go with white! I was originally concerned that they would look too plastic but having seen the aluminium i do think they look good. So white it’s going to be. I figured that white windows have been around forever and therefore don’t believe it will ‘date’ like anthracite is probably going to do - although I do like anthracite too. Just hope that I’m happy with the decision once they have been installed! Good luck with your decision!

Have you considered dual colour bi-folds? If you think you'd prefer black to match the interior and anthracite grey to match the exterior, this could be the solution?

That would be my ideal but it's the cost as already gone from a 3m to a 6m run plus the extra steel cost above to take the wider doors.

In that case, I think black would be the best colour to go for as you'll likely spend more time indoors appreciating your industrial interior style. I think black would look fab in and out :-)

I would prefer anthracite to black.

As you say/ask, black will be harsher. Anthracite will provide the perception of black but in a slightly softer and I feel, more classy way.

Hi Tani. I think I would go for anthracite. It is a bit softer and also has a blue undertone which the off black appears to (well on a number of pictures on my screen anyway!)

Most bifolds come in a range of RAL options so might be worth checking if you can only have black or anthracite. We had exactly the same dilemma and had decided on anthracite grey but in the flesh it looked too light. We went for dark grey in the end (between black and anthracite) and really pleased.

Thank you. Yes will check the cost to see if it changes with non standard colours.

Seems an equal split so far on the poll - always does that with mine , ha ha

My sister in law has black, with natural materials they look fabulous, not harsh at all. I think in some ways the black is more neutral?

I can’t remember the non standard colour we chose for our bifold/ms & windows but the lead time was too long (we didn’t realise this) so in the end we went with anthracite.

I’d veer towards black. It is a classic window colour and was used a lot throughout history, it’s not just a modern thing. Whenever I see black windows in a photo, I think wow! Of course anthracite is pretty dark anyway so would probably look good too. Just look at these!
