bookmatched marble island

Hello! We are renovating and will have an over sized island (around 350cm long by around 180cm) with a marble worktop. As the marble slabs aren’t big enough we are looking to bookmatch marble for the worktop. I can’t work out if the join will bother me and wondered if anyone has done this before. It’s a big house with a big space so can definitely take the island size (and we have not got many other units!) thanks

Looks lovely, the join looks fine, but... I know two people with beautiful marble worktops and both have found it marks very very easily. One is replacing hers with quartz as she hates the marks so much. You can get excellent marble look quartz or porcelain and it can also be bookmatched... Just saying!

There is a blue moleanos limestone as well which is more silver grey and may be a better match although from memory it still has patches of beige in it. Might be worth getting a sample. I don't have experience of real marble floors but they sound like a nightmare to keep clean in a kitchen. Have you seen porcelain tiles made to look like marble-they are actually really nice. Have a look at casa dolce casa stones & more range for examples. I have their smooth lipica tile-not marble but it matches with purbeck stone and moles breath in terms of colour.

I wouldn‘t call that bookmatched no. However bookmatching is only possible when they have a block that yielded two good slabs right next to each other so they can be opened out like a book and mirror each other. I can’t see how those two slabs could have been cut from right next to each other - perhaps they didn’t have two that were and so could be truly bookmatched. Did you ask for bookmatched pieces when you chose your marble or did you add in that request later? If the latter this may be the best they could do with the piece you chose. It’s lovely marble and in your first picture the join is not obvious. If you paid a premium for the bookmatching I would want that refunded but otherwise it’s a nice result.

Book matching gives a lovely effect but if you are worried you could always go for a plain quartz stone and have it jointed, which wouldn't stand out.

If you find the right worktop installation company they can normally handle a join with little fuss making it quite seamless. It's normally best to speak directly to the stone installation company you're thinking of going with as they will be able to give you the best advise on whats possible, and probably have some images of previous jobs so you can work out if it will bother you.

Hi. I agree with the comments marble is much softer than quartz and will show wear - have a look at Caesarstone - they have marble effect slabs and offer 25 year warranty - Caesarstone

We don't have issues with joins - customer find them acceptable - Hope this helps
