Cost of a driveway?

Can you please advise cost options of getting a driveway done? Currently has crazy paving in front of the garage (1 car width, 2 cars in length), but we would want to replace that and the front lawn to make total area in front of house a driveway,. Measures approx 12m x 10m.

Ideally need to keep costs down so would be useful to know material options to do this. Don’t want gravel. Thank you.

Hi jam15, The cost of fitting a driveways will depend on the size and material choice of course. The prices for natural stone paving option will range between £20-£28 per square metre, that's excluding labour costs. So to buy paving slabs for an area of around 15 square metres will cost about £400.

To bring down the cost you could actually choose to fit poor quality material but the problem is many sellers are reluctant to provide discounts as they pre-buy materials and they don't want to compromise on their margin.

Some of our local post delivery persons won't walk on stamped concrete in the winter due to slipping in frost and snow so that's something to bear in mind. You can get a solution to spread on block paving to prevent weeds. My neighbour has it but still has a few of the little devils appear.

Legally, no. Although they have right of way, as you own the driveway the repair costs are down to you. However, the neighbours should hopefully offer to share costs with you as a gesture of goodwill given that they use the access. In short you can't refuse access / right if way, but they can refuse to contribute to the cost of repair. Do you know what the arrangement was with the previous owners? Did this come up in your searches? We have the same issue and our solicitor made a big deal about it, so we spoke to the vendor and the neighbours to find out what the agreement was before exchanging (currently everyone pays equal contribution to repairs). If not, speak to your neighbours and ask if they would be willing to contribute. The offer of a beer or two might soften the blow!

I would get quotes for cost, labour differs hugely depending on where you live. I must admit I like gravel if that is an option. If im honest though I would not concrete over all of that, I think it would detract hugely from the house. Could you not just have a drive on the left as it would fit at least 3 cars? Maybe have a path to the door, lawn and a few large shrubs/trees to keep maintenance low. I'm not a big fan but if you really don't want to do any gardening then have a look at artificial turf, some of them are quite realistic although I'm not entirely convinced they're maintenance free! Alternatively pay a retired person to do an hour or 2 each week when the lawn needs cutting

Thanks all for the advice. That's good to know they are not overpriced etc. We are considering not having double gates now due to the cost - (we only wanted them to put our cmaper through but as we want to sell soon, it seems little point spending the extra money on it!) and going for a fixed fence with larger pedestrian door. Going to see how the price differs there. The gates are set far back on the drive as more privacy gates to the back garden and not actual driveway gates and they are currently 7' high 😁
