Lighting advice

Hello, I'm looking to replace my living room ceiling lights. There are two light fittings, but they are quite close together (about 1.5m apart) and the ceiling is quite low. As such, lights need to be fairly flush and not too imposing.

The current ones are pretty inoffensive, but I don't like them when they are lit. They give off a patterned light due to the cut glass. Also, they take a special type of bulb so I'm limited with bulb options.

Despite it being a "through room" it's surprisingly dull/dark, even on a bright day. What I'd like is lights I can turn on during the day that flood the room with light, and which take a regular bulb so that i have lots of options and can play around with brightness/warmth.

Needs to be on a tight budget.

The only thing I can think, is to have some kind of plain glass shade which can be hung really close to the ceiling?

Any ideas would be gratefully received!

Thanks. Pics attached of the current lights.
