Banana trees

How do you stop your banana trees from lifting up your patio? We have found our bananas almost intrusive and will lift concrete up!

HI there - yes Banana clumps are not for the casual gardener as the clump needs to be managed over time. The best way to control growth is to immediately cut off any side growing baby bananas , or leave just one to grow so that when the main trunk dies -you have just one new trunk to take over....also putting down some kind of hard barrier or enclosing the clump in a border with retaining walls will control the growth and spread. My clients from this project are mad keen gardeners and totally prepared to take up a paving stone to cut back the banana, then the paving stone can be put back in its place . Good luck!!

Thank you for your response. We have placed a barrier around our banana trees, and we thin out when needed.

Fabulous to see people embracing sub-tropical planting. It's so effective used correctly and the development can be rapid! Just remember to have plenty of horticultural fleece ready for the winter. We've used lots of bananas, palms & tree ferns over the years and have never lost one with a bit of careful winter wrapping!

Our family's favorite is Zucchini and Blueberry Pancakes. I know it sounds strange, but they really are delicious. INGREDIENTS: 1/3 cup milk (I use rice or oat milk) 2 cups zucchini (2 sm-med size zucchini) 3 eggs 2 heaping tablespoons of honey 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 1/2 cup flour (I use whole spelt or whole wheat) 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 package of blueberries DIRECTIONS: Cut zucchini into 1" size pieces and put in food processor or blender. Blend until about the size of rice. Add milk, eggs, honey and cinnamon, blend until smooth. Next blend in 1/2 the flour and baking powder at a time. Stir in blueberries. Add extra milk, if too thick. Cook on warm griddle. TIPS: For picky eaters, peel zucchini first to remove green specks. Pancakes freeze well. Pull out as many as needed and warm up in a toaster, oven or microwave for a quick and healthy breakfast.

Hi there 81bec. I'm not sure if you've gotten started on the chances to your patch of garden, but if you haven't here are some tips, from someone who also loves low maintenance gardens that are drought proof but look gorgeous all year round..start buy getting rid of the camellia, what ever evergreen is hiding behind it and the red robin..leaving the one plant you actually seem to like, the Cordyline (good choice). Rake away all the gravel and lay down some good compost (after planting, layer over with mulch as it'll stop weeds and retain moisture, resulting in a lower maintenance garden). Next, put a piece of trellis against the side of the porch that currently has the camellia and evergreen and plant a Trachelospermum Jasminoides (Star Jasmine)-it's evergreen, a climber, low maintenance and has dark green leaves in summer with clusters of strongly fragrant white star-shaped flowers and rusty red leaves in winter, lovely. Next, plant a mix of Pennisetum Firework grass and Ox-eye daisies (sometimes called Marguerite) at the back near the wall. In the middle "row" plant a mix of Stipa Tenuissima (Mexican Feather Grass) and Echinacea (purple coneflower) and in the front, maybe either side of a wooden love seat, plant Chasmanthium Latifolium (Spangle grass). All are showstoppers year round, low maintenance, drought proof and do well in sun or semi-shade. The grasses all need the same kind of care once a year, as do the flowers, meaning you only have to do maintenance twice in a year as well as a little watering when it's really dry in exchange for year round interest and beauty that will perfectly compliment the Cordyline. Ooh Kate - where to start? You have soo many options but I think first of all you need to define your style.
