POLL: Hardwood flooring - paint or stain?
Comments (9)Hello Tom, It's a good one and means I can't vote as I have a Jackboot in both camps! (which you haven't allowed for) Paint is soo fantastic and I tend to think colour rather than white..but... that's only because I have had white floors for 10 years.. so need a change... Stain is gr8 if you want to go dark and have a grainy feel... Dark wood paint too is fantastic.. especially electric blue and other wonderments... So it really does depend on the aesthetic preference and what else is happening in the room... : ))...See MorePaint or stain dresser?
Comments (8)In that case I agree and go with a stained top but definitely paint the underneath. You could try a coloured wax which I think will be the best match for the table. There’s a few brands but this one has many good reviews: https://www.wood-finishes-direct.com/product/fiddes-wax Just remember that with wax the more layers you apply the deeper the tone in colour but nicer sheen. Whichever way you do it the cabinet will need sanding first for best results. Good luck and keep us updated. Don’t hesitate if you have more questions, myself and other houzzers will likely chip in:-)...See More1960s open tread staircase renovation suggestions please
Comments (14)I agree with you 100%. Design is all well and good but if it doesn’t function well then it soon loses its appeal and for me if it means more cleaning then forget it! The images on the blog look great though I notice that the treads are also ply. Like you I am not entirely convinced ply will work with teak. I think it would be a shame to paint the teak so could you do the reverse of what you propose, keep the teak and have painted the rails? Another consideration is painted rails will stand up to wear and tear much better than painted treads. Wumis suggestion to use metal is good though I would prefer something softer such as laser cut metal panels which come in all sorts of patterns. The coppery colour of Corten steel might look good. They would also create patterns from the light shining through from the roof light. Good lighting might be another consideration. Box in the treads and use strip LED lights hidden under the treads. Not quite the same but once the children are grown you could remove the risers. These could be painted to match the rails. I expect the teak is slathered in a hard varnish that crazes and scratches easily and cannot be repaired. It would be nice to take it back to the wood and finish it in something that is easier to maintain. I used Sikkins on new oak window frames which was a doddle to maintain. Mind you it won’t be so much of a doddle to strip the varnish off the teak! A job not for the faint hearted but, none the less, worthwhile....See MoreCut string vs closed tread staircase
Comments (6)It is a Victorian house with modern extension out the back. I am keeping the period style of the original house so I am thinking cut string with a stair runner would look good. Although I doubt the Victorians would have ever put the stairs in that position. There is a small child ...what is the problem there? Sticking feet through the gaps?...See MoreDavid J. Design Inc.
